For all you 5ers

I am looking at buying an Open Range R398RSS Fifth wheel.....these are the specs:

GVWR = 14,040
UVW = 11,010
DRY HITCH WEIGHT = 2,040
DRY AXLE WEIGHT = 8,970
GROSS NCC = 3,030

Can I pull this with my 2011 F350, CC, 4x4, 3.31, SRW, 8' bed and of course 6.7. Just concerned about 3.31 and SRW. We never expected to go this big, but it has the layout we like.

Thanks in advance for the awesome input.

My 36 foot Heartland Big Horn 3055RL has a gvw of 14000 pounds. My empty delivery weight was 10775. I have weighed the rig 3 times since I got the truck in my signature. The truck weighs 8700 pounds with full fuel, 2 adults, a dachshund, the B&W Companion hitch and 2 Honda generators in the bed. 5000 pounds on the front and 3700 on the rear. With the trailer attached the entire rig weighs 22100 pounds. 5100 on the front, 6100 on the rear, 2400 on the pin or hitch and 11500 on the trailer axles. I am under all ratings for the truck. I have 1400 pounds of GCVW left, 700 pounds of rear axle weight left but only 300 pounds of GVW rating left. The trailer is loaded for 2 weeks of travel, full propane, empty waste tanks and 30 gallons of fresh water so I could get the weight down. The truck pulls this trailer like it is not there. I can pass multiple vehicles at a time if necessary with out breaking a sweat. The biggest problem is speed. Too much of it. If you are not careful or running on cruise, it is real easy to look down and see that you are towing the trailer 80 mph. I run the cruise because I do not drive that fast loaded. I get 11.5 mpg towing at 70, 12 mpg at 65 and 13 at 55. Above 70 and it drops fast. Your trailer is very similar in profile, size and weight. I am sure you will be fine with the 3.30 gears. In fact,if I was ordering one today I would get the 3.30 gears. Also, with the 2400 pounds of pin weight I sit just about level. I am going to move some stuff around to see if I can get 200 pounds off the pin. Hope this helped.

Regards

Question

question for Rickatic and other 2011 F350 owners:

What is the GVWR for your truck and do you have 20" wheels? The specs show the 2011 F350 is 10,000lb GVWR. Can you get a higher GVWR on the 2011 F350? There is a 68U extra payload option but I think it requires the 18" wheels.

Are you guys seeing any axle hop or shuddering when you begin pulling your heavy 5th wheels from a dead stop?

I have a 34ft Cedar Creek triple slide 5th wheel. Unloaded weight is 10,683 lbs, pin weight is 1962, Trailer GVWR is 13,962. I've never weighed it but we don't load it down.

My '08 F250 is pushed down pretty good with the pin weight (which we all know is always heavier. I'd say it's about 2200-2300 lbs since the bedroom with clothes and basement storage is at the front) I've had to add Timbren rubber springs to keep the bed somewhat level.

Will the 10,000 GVWR rating on the F350 and the extra spring keep me in good shape? I don't want to have to add any air bags or extra springs. Just looking for some reassurance that the bed will sit level with the 5th wheel on the bed.

I'm on the fence between the 3500 HD SRW and the F350 6.7 SRW CC SB right now.

I ordered a F-350, XLT, SRW, CC, 4x2, SB. to get a 11,200 lb GVWR I had to get the 18" wheels as the 17" do not have the load rating. With 17" its GVWR was 10,800 lbs.

The 68U payload option only good with the 6.2 L gas engine.

I have a 34 foot loaded it weighs 10,500 so we are pretty close. My 02 F250 4x4 SC would squat a little and the front end would then appear as if I had put 2" springs in it.

My new F350 FX4 Crew SRW short box, the same trailer causes my truck to sit perfect, it is still a small amount higher in the rear which is great. The 350's have an extra spring in the back, the springs were just coming into contact with the upper stops. I was concerned about ride being "jittery" but it is excellent.

I did have to lower my hitch in the bed of the truck though because the new truck sits almost dead-on 3" taller. If your hitch doesn't move you could adjust the king pin on the camper just as well. I still had plenty of room so as to not have the bed hit the under side of the camper.

My truck has a gvw of 11500 pounds. It does have 20" wheels. Have you weighed your rig.? Your rig is very similar in ratings as mine. With my 04 F250 I made a conscious effort to keep the weight down because I had weighed the rig 15 minutes after I pulled it off the dealers lot. I never carried any water in the waste tanks and only 20 gallons in the fresh water tank. I actually have increased my traveling weight by 1100 pounds with the new truck. This increased my pin weight by almost 300 pounds. You will be over GVW and more than likely real close on RAWR with a 10000# GVW. I recommend the 11500 package.

It costs $9 to weigh the truck and trailer at any CAT scale. You can unhook after you weigh the rig and for $1 they will reweigh just the truck. I think you will be surprised at what your rig really weighs. Most people are.

Don't get the 10,000 lbs package on a F350 as that would be a down grade.

I ordered my 2011 on the 23rd of July with the 20" wheels and the 11,500 lbs package. The highest for a SRW according to the brochure anyway. So I don't see why you could not get the 11,200 lbs package with the 20" wheels as well.

Go with the Ford better outfit in my opinion, plus the Fords are up to 400 hp and 800 ft lbs torque now after the update or a job 2 build. Also the Fords are better looking.

I do not currently own an 2011 yet, (cash flow says wait 6 months...), but I thought I would throw out my two cents anyway. I have am looking at the Chevy also but there are several problems. The Chevy is a decent truck but over the last several years, the interior and bodies do not appear to hold up as well. This is only a concern if you are going to keep the truck for an extended period. Both Ford and Chevy have symilar engine performance (Ford has a slight edge).

A real kicker for me involves the companies them selves. Ford is still an independant company. GM is owned primarily by the government and the unions, the share holders got the short end of the stick last spring. It would need to be a vastly superior product to overcome that for me. As both manufacturers build a good product (I still say Ford is better), I cannot justify it. A bit of a personal opinion here, but something to consider.

One other thing to keep in mind (at least for Canadian buyers), if you buy the camper certification option, you cannot get the 20" wheels - 18" only.

That might make some sense if you couldn't get the 20" wheels with the fifth wheel option. Go figure.
