2008 and the radiators

Well I'm still looking at trucks. Seriously looking at a 08 6.4 with 40k miles. I got the dealer to get an Oasis report and pretty clean. I'm surprised because I assumed that the rad would have been replaced but it wasn't. Should I be concerned since it is now out of the 3/36 warranty? Is there still a chance I might be putting in a new rad down the road or if the rad was going to go would it have been replaced by now?

Here's a picture.

the seams at the end caps seem to separate for some reason..
not just 08s, but most prevalent there

there are a number of theories,

frame flex
sticking thermostats, which cause an unexpected pressure increase.

some 6.4 owners have had multiple in a couple years.

I am at 40K/1057 hours and have my orginal radiator...I would still get some kind of insurance if i were you.

Odds are against us. Good news is they don't outright fail. Starts as a slow leak. So you can still do what needs to be done. Go where you need to go.

I believe this is a Diesel radiator problem... just to be clear.

Yes, I did state that is a 6.4 in my original post.

Makes me feel a little better. I had visions of it leaving me with the 5th wheel stranded along the road in the middle of nowhere. I am going to get a quote for an extended warranty.

if you get to look at it again, on the door pillar between drivers & passenger, there is a white tag, down low.. in the upper left corner is the build date.. mon/yr and it will help us understand what build group (job number) your truck is in..

earlier ones (mine, job 1) had more trouble than later (job 3 in 08)..

my build date is 4/07

Agree there, ours is a job 1. I put roughly 1.5 gallons in the degas bottle and get the coolant smell after it is warmed up. Haven't found where it is leaking yet but it appears some may be blowing out the top of the degas bottle. FWIW the OASIS on this one was clean as well, it has 75K miles and roughly 2400 hours IIRC.

It's probably Job 1. I got a copy of the window sticker online and the build date was June 11, 2007.

Mine is a Job 1 also. Had the radiator replace shortly after I picked it up (about 26,000 miles on it). Mine did very much as Senix describes above. Slow leak, but the temps never got out of hand (in fact, the temp gauge never got above normal). They replaced the radiator and the t-stat housing. Have since put over 12,000 miles on it and pulled my 5th wheel (around 11,000 pounds) from Houston to Branson to Omaha and back, and a couple of smaller trips between. No issues noted and coolant is holding. This thing is a beast!

Mine is job 3 and noticed the dreaded radiator leak last evening after work at 23K miles. Going in for the new radiator (hopefully with stronger seams) on Monday.

I looked in to the extended warranty from Ford. They want over 3k for a 7yr 200k warranty. Starts from original warranty date. The basic warranty is 5yr 100k. Hitting 5yrs or 100k first is a toss up. I will for sure hit 7 yrs before 200k. So the extended warranty is a 2yr deal (over 1500 dollars per yr). It was'nt worth it to me.

before u throw in the towel, ask our resident ford parts guy,
partsguyed (his user id) and his web site http://partsguyed.com/

he can usually get decent deals on parts and warranties.
