pivot joint removal
Hey guys, tearing apart the front axle (Dana 44) on my 67. It has the pivot joints for the spindles that come in from the top and bottom, and bolt on with 4 bolts. I have the bolts out, I'm just wondering if I need some special tool to lift them out, or can I just pry them out.

It sounds like a closed knuckle 44. I have a 66 3/4 T 4wd of another "make" that has the closed knuckle 44 and although it was 7 or 8 years ago that I "reworked " everything I believe all I did after getting the 4 top and 4 bottom bolts out was a gentle rap to the cap with a brass hammer and they came loose. There are shims between the cap and the housing so be sure and keep them in order although if you replace the upper and lower bearings you may have to change the shim thickness depending on how wore out everything is. In lieu of a brass hammer a big ball peen and a short lenght of 2x4 should work also
