i just bought a 2008 ford escape xlt, beside the door's windows theres a 1 1/2 inch wide strip of aluminum that is painted black.... on 2 of these strips the pain is peeling off... is this a common problem, and are they pretty easy to replace

I assume this is the black metal strip that is on the trailing edge of the front doors, and another on the leading edge of the rear doors, right next to their respective windows.
Our 2010 had paint chipped off and a small dent on a front door strip. Probably got hit by a stone while on the car carrier to dealer. They ordered the part, and I brought it back to be installed. Took them 10 mins off in the body shop to replace it.
The front door strip looks like it might slide on over the door edge, and snap into place.
If you are thinking of replacing it yourself, I can try to look it up in the 2010 shop manual tomorrow. Since the body redesign was for 2008, I would expect the 2010 to be the same there. Post back if you want instructions. If you are just going to let a dealer do it, I won't bother looking it up.
I took a look in the shop manual. They only have a small line drawing on those moldings. It shows both front and back moldings as having an ear on top and bottom that are riveted to the body. For the front door molding, the ears are towards the front edge. For the rear doors, the ears are towards the rear edge. I didn't try to peel the rubber on ours back to try to see the rivets.
