The past couple weeks I've had some "surging" and erratic idle issues at all speeds, highway travelin' or stop signs. Late build '04 6.0, 128K, installed EGR delete w/ oil cooler rebuild, coolant filter and new turbo back exhaust about 2K miles ago. Changed the oil and all filters (oil, fuel, air) and flushed the cooling system. This afternoon it actually died on me twice at stoplights coming home. The engine would bog down, sputter and die. At one point I was able to floor the throttle at a stoplight (idling rough) with absolutely NO response from the engine. It started right back up and I got it home and hit FTE!
After looking into FICM, injector threads I found some info on the ICP (front part of passenger valve cover on my engine). I went out, started it up and unplugged the ICP. It coughed as advertised and kept running. I plugged it back in. Jumped in the truck and shifted the auto through all the gears at a standstill and the engine changed it's tune noticeably for the better! I mean it was music to my ears noticeable. Smoothed right out, better throttle response than I've had in awhile and would go right back to a rock solid idle! I should also say the ICP plug looked factory new, clean as a whistle. Tell me it can't be this easy?? Should I pull the ICP and take a look in there with possible plans to replace? I don't have a code reader to check codes but can have the hobby shop on the USMC base check'em Mon when I go to work...
Did you notice if the sensor connector was not fullt "seated"? If it was on all the way, I would probably replace it (or at least have a spare available).
Thanks for the responses fellas. Wires all looked good and it's possible it was not fully seated after the EGR delete/ oil cooler rebuild. I'll look into picking up another sensor if the issues come back.
Well my truck had the same symtoms and turned out to be the wiring harness, they replaced both instead of trying to find the problem because I told them to.The problemwas in the turbo area down by the up pipes from the manifold, I think it was the wires to the EBP sensor that were melted together inside of the plastic protective tube. My truck would fine then act up so if it continues look there. No codes or engine light the whole time, even with Ford test equipement.
Gave it a good drive today after the unplug/ re-plug and it ran like a new truck. No issues whatsoever so hopefully it just wasn't fully seated. Time will tell. Much appreciation for this website as it's saved me THOUSANDS on this truck in repairs!
