so I just bought a 1990 F-150 with the borg warner T-18. I was told by the seller that it needed a new clutch. I took it all apart and the clutch was brand new.
The transmission was having a hard time going into second and first ( I never drove it, I let the wife decide when we were buying it )
so I took the transmission top cover off and took a look inside, everything looks ok to me, I can even slide the gear into 2nd.
Does that mean nothing?
What the hell do I do?
buy a new synchronizer?
or another transmission?
I already bought another transmission and it was half full of water when I drained the oil, so I assume it's toast, but atleast I can use the input shaft from it.
one of the gears for 4th or 3rd (near the bottom of the case) has half of a tooth missing, would this be a problem for a stock HP engine? (5.0)
How is the clutch pedal, linkage, clutch master mount, line and slave mount?
A worn synchro will grind, but get into gear eventually.
The one full of water, can you take it back? As for the broken gear, only if you are trying to make a vehicle work in the face of an enemy invasion would you put that back together.
Taking them apart is the easy part. Putting it back together right, that's the trick.
A rebuild kit can be had for about $150, and you can get a blown up diagram from here:
Is the T18 hard to get into all gears?? Is it hard to get into gear just when the engine is running?? Or is it hard to get into gear when the engine is off?
can't return the one full of water, got it off craigslist. It's probably salvagable, but won't work with my truck if I don't pull it apart and swap the tail shaft. and I'm not looking for a big project.
the transmission that came out of the truck never grinded, it just didn't want to go into gears. 3rd and 4th shifted fine, that's also at higher speeds though. I can't remember if it was hard going into gears with the engine off, I'll go assemble the top real quick and try.
clutch master cylinder, hose, firewall, etc is all new or solid. last owner replaced all of it, probably trying to fix this problem
no, but you can see in the pic that the tip of the input shaft has a chunk missing.
the front input shaft bearing doesn't have anymore play than the other transmission.
I'll pull the shaft off of the rusty transmission and see how hard it will be to swap, then if I can, I'll do that and just install the transmission and re-check the clutch system
