I am sizing up this 74 F250 4x4 with a 428. How do I know this is a 428 and do you think this truck is worth $4000.00 Canadian. The box is fairly rusty but the drive train is solid. 4 speed, propane fuel, ps, pb, ac, dana posi tracks, hydraulic winch, line locks. Any input would be helpful, for I have not owned a Ford truck before.
Measure the stroke with a wooden dowel. You should get around 3.984 inches. There is no way to know if the bore is a 428 spec bore of 4.13 without disassembly. Are you positive the engine is an FE?
The "sidewinder" intake will fit just about any FE..The only way to tell if you have a 428 for sure is to pull a head and measure the bore along with the stroke..Of course someone could have tried to make a 428 and overbored another FE which is not really a good idea as it can make the cylinder walls too thin..But if you do have the 428 rotating assembly you could always make a 410 if the block is bad..JMO..If you have more ?'s on FE's you should head over to the board, lots of people that know their stuff over there..
A typical FE flexplate has little or no large holes in it. The 428's have triangular holes in it that look like pizza slices. The 428 balances different than the rest of the FE's.
