I have yet another?

Ok, this may sound dtupid but I need to ask anyway.
My friend ahs a '98 F150 4x4 w/5.4 automatic. We are going to try and track down a possible vac leak tomorrow. He told me that with the air intake unbolted, he put a piece of regular lined paper over the intake tube and it kept running. Would this point towards a vac leak. He has pulled codes that say it is running lean on banks 1 and 2.
AND would this also cause the trans to act up? He says that when it's in overdrive and you step on the accelerator the RPMs either drop or dont move at all. But seems to work fine w/ OD off. Any ideas? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

The transmission problem sounds almost exactly like what my '98 5.4 is doing. When the truck is coasting and I step on the gas (to make a yellow light or pass a car), the truck will shift into overdrive and then into 3rd and accelerate like normal. That initial drop in RPMs bugs the heck out of me. As you mentioned, with the O/D off, it won't do it.

Any information would be helpful...I'm sure to the both of us assuming the problems are the same in nature.
