If your engine is stock, then its free as it has a cold air intake as oem equipment

A true aftermarket (not a open element type that reduces horespower as it sucks in the hot engine compartment air) larger than stock cold air system can help, but mainly at the higher engine RPM's as the factory stock system is more than adequate for normal driving.

A aftermarket will generaly change the air intake noise, making your truck sound more gutsy when you get on the throttle, weither this is good 'or bad depends upon your personal opinion.

As far as cost, free from the factory, or you can pay from $100 to $200 for a kit (depending upon year/engine) or if one is not available for your model, then what ever the parts can run, but actually a functional cold air filter box that is robust and will stand up does take a little engineering.

A popular thing to do is put a factory 300I6 or 460FI air box and hoses because its larger than the 302/351's. As far as price for a cold air intake the Summit/Trick Flow looks the same as the K&N and is a lot less.

There has been some good discussion on tune ups and performance in the 87-96 section that is worth reading.

how much does cold air intake cost?

I made one for my mustang for about forty bucks. I go the becessary connectors for vacuum, temp sensor etc. and tied them together with a couple rubber intake connectors and a stretch of 3" stainless steel flexpipe with a cone C.A. filter at the end. put it right through the hole in the fender. added about 2-3mpg and sounds more aggressive too. All bought off the shelf from checkers for $40-$50, $60-$70 with the filter.

Also what type of air filter would be good for installing CA intake on a truck? does it have to be a cone?

Nope, it does not have to be a cone. What you need is something like the factory uses, to pull in cold air from ahead of the radiator.

Those cones you see mounted in the engine compartment are NOT a cold air intake, unless they are hidden inside a box which had ducting / tubing to cool air outside of the engine compartment.

If you want to build your own, I would start with the factory air cleaner housing (if carb'd) and use a combination of tube and hose to get to the outside air. PVC pipe is esy to work with.

If you have the EFI setup, then you rework the factory airbow, reduce the air intake restrictions by enlarging the incoming air path by again using a combination of tube and hose. (PVC pipe is cheap and easy to work with)

If you really want to get creative, and have EFI, then take the time to insulate the incoming air, this will ensure the coolest, densest air.

Do I hook the tubing up to the carb and put the filter on the end? or do I hook the tubing up to the air filter? also is it possible to bring 2 sets of tubing in so i can have twice the power?
