Bad fuel sending unit??

Hello all, I have a 2002 F250 PSD with what I believe is the 32 gallon tank. My fuel gauge is all over the place. The only time it is really accurate is when it is completely full of fuel but even then sometimes after I fill the tank the gauge will drop all the way to empty and the low fuel light will come on. Does this sound like I need a new fuel sending unit? I priced them from the stealership and they wanted close to $500! If this is the fuel sending unit, does anybody know where I can get a good aftermarket or good used one? I checked my local salvage yards with no luck.<O</O

My 2002 F350 also has an issue with the fuel reading. When I fill the tank all is well until I get to about 3/4 then the gauge will drop to the 1/2 mark and rise to the 3/4 mark. When I get below the 1/2 mark the gauge stops acting weird. While under warranty I took my truck to the dealer and of course they couldn't make the problem occur. I bet now since the truck is out of warranty and the bill will be mine, I bet the dealership would find the problem and then give me the bill.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a fairly common problem with these trucks. My sender too, has a "bad spot" at about the 3/4 level. It will drop to empty and the light will come on, then it rebounds later. It doesn't do it on every tank.

I was going to replace it when I did my intank mods, but I decided to just live with it because the dang things are expensive. IIRC Parts Guy Ed has 'em for $300-$400. That's about as good as you're gonna be able to do on a new unit.

I think I read somewhere here that the gasser sending unit is the same thing, and comes as just the sending unit, not the whole pickup assembly. Much cheaper.

Seems to me since this is a common problem with our trucks, Ford should have to step up to the plate with this just like the CPS situation.

I share your frustration also. mine dosen't work between 1/2 and 3/4 it stays at full till i get to 1/2 tank then drops and keep working till the bottom.
I pulled the sender out of my parts truck but haven't installed yet.
Im glad I saved it now. I would keep looking for a wrecked one. I see em all the time here. Mostly roll overs.
Good luck

Thanks Tako, I did purchase a cheaper $87 gas unit but got kinda' gun shy when I went to replace it, they look nothing alike! I made a couple phone calls about the issue and had one guy tell me it will work if you somehow interchange parts from both the diesel and gas versions. He said he would email me instructions but I am still waiting on them. When I do finally get them I will be sure to post on FTE if it works.

That would be sweet although very unlikely to happen..it would probably force Ford out of business. It would be awesome if they would atleast offer us the replacement parts at a wholesale rate or something similar to that, that way they wouldn't loose money but at the same time they would make some very happy Ford runners out there. Now that would make the Durapukes and cumm-a-part owners look twice!

I think the only way Ford would do something is if forced to do so by the courts. They know this is a problem with many, many trucks.

You guys need to realize that MANY vehicles have problems with fuel sending units. The things plain wear out. Ford isn't going to recall something like that. Just be glad you don't have gasser chevy's that need entire fuel pumps every 100k.

I found one in Sulphur,LA for $75 I only needed the umbrella off of it and when I pulled the sending unit out the umbrella was still in the bottom of the tank. Sening unit still looks good though. I put it back in the tank so it wouldnt be exposed to the elements considering the tank was still 3/4 full of some good looking diesel. Thought about buying the whole tank if the fuel came with it!!!!HA HA HA

The shop is called TOPS auto recycling.

takotruckin,

I think it goes beyond that. I think somewhere along the line, many of the sending units are defective.
