Ok i am trying to help my best friend's aunt out. I hate electrical so im coming to you guys for help. She is having some trouble with her truck. Its a 2006 f150 super crew with the 5.4 motor auto trans with 40k.
What the truck is doing is every now and then while driving the radio, dash lights, windows and ac will just stop working. It isnt all the time. She said that it could go for a week doing nothing and then one day it will do all of those things...
We had the alternator tested as this was the first thing that came to mind when she told me what it was doing. But it tested fine. Any ideas?
Have you made sure that maybe a fuse or relay has a bad connection or is starting to go bad?
It could also be that a wire is starting to burn through. I had an old Ford Tempo back in the mid 90's and it had a problem where once it got hot enough it started to burn through one of the wires leading away from the battery. Was a strange problem but it did cause a similar issue to what you are talking about. It didn't do it all the time just when I drove for extended periods and it got hot enough but I couldn't find the issue until it burned all the way through the wire.
Check for loose or damaged wiring harness connections. Is it raining or wet when the problem occurs? A connector seal may be allowing moisture in somewhere.
Freaky intermittent problems like that can be real hard to isolate. She should take it to a dealer and have them retrieve all the codes in it to determine if it is an intermittent charging system issue. Dead cells in the battery can be intermittently collapsing, alternator that overcharges can cause as many freaky things as one that stops charging. I would also pull the kick panel on the RH side and check the connectors going into the Smart Junction Box for loosely snapped in connectors. Ive found those occasionally loose but not pulled apart and causing intermittent crazy stuff like that.
