With as much fun as it is, depending on what you want to spend will help decide if you want to get a new vehicle. There are going to be some things here to keep in mind if you want to register your vehicle here, or purchase your vehicle here.

I think gas is running between 2.70-2.80 a gallon here.

If you want to know about the emissions standards and testing, check out this link.
ADEQ: Air Quality Division: Vehicle Emissions
Because you have an 88 model, testing isnt as rigid as the mid to late 90's vehicles. Just make sure you have all your emissions equipment on that it came with, and that you dont smoke running down the road!

I personally kept my stuff registered back home. I have some property back home still, and use it as my address. I didnt want to go through some of the headaches with registration and emissions, especially the fact that where I came from there are no emissions, and my truck was moddified for that.

Welcome to Surprise.. You may end up bumping into me, LOL! Make sure you have AC! I know that some do it without, but I rather not! We hit some temps this summer that had creeped up to 118. Winters are the best however!

Yeah, if you want, you could gut a cat, tube a muffler, and as long as you are burning clean, try a test out at one of the mobile shops that advertise around here. If you come across clean enough, then tempt it with the emissions testing center on Bell road.

I personally am not going to try it out. I know after hearing some of the stories here about vehicles being DQ's on the test, that you end up going through a lot of a nightmare getting it to pass the second time and so on. I kept all mine registered back home. This also allows me to "roll coal" and go unrestricted without any issues.

The other neat thing about being out here.. Next to Sun City, there is a ton of retirees here and "snow birds", so you never draw any attention running around with plates from a different state. I dont drive in a style to draw attention, but it seems like a person could with the way I have seen so many locals drive, LOL!

There are decent deals on trucks out here as well.. as long as they arent diesel, LOL! Thats when price gets up there. But for the most part, you can find something decent that has passed emissions.

Be careful, you are required to register any vehicle and do the license within 30 days of residency. It is a 600 dollar fine and is enforced.
