Rustoleum Paint Mixture For Frame

I'll be painting my frame on the '96 this weekend and decided to go with the Rustoleum route instead of POR or Chassisaver. Someone here had redone their frame with it & posted pics and it looked incredible! I'm sorry I can't remember who, but if you be so kind as to re-post that'd be great!
One more question-I'm using the brush-on Rustoleum gloss black-does anyone know exactly how much acetone to cut a quart can with? Any other tips? TIA
Roger

I did my 75 truck frame back in 98 and my dad's 86 F150 frame and under the box back in 2000. Both frames still look great. My 75's box is rusted bad but thats another story. I used the rust-oleum rusty metal primer first and then the gloss black. I thinned it with mineral spirits and sprayed it with a paint gun. Used the bigger 1.7 mm nozzle. The primer takes a while to dry, at least a couple days depending on the heat and humidity. Smells a little weird too. I think it has some fish oil in it or something. I read the cans I still have and if you brush it, shouldn't have to thin it, according to the can. Both cans say to use mineral spirits if you do thin it. Hope this helps.

I just bought a gallon of the Professional Rust-oleum in gloss black. On the can it says thinning is not usually necessary for brushing or rolling ... for spraying, you can thin up to 1.5-2 pints of acetone per gallon, so .5 pint for a quart. The can says to use mineral spirits for cleanup, but I know people use it to thin the paint, too, apparently successfully.

Have you heard of the $50 DIY paint jobs? People who use the rust-oleum for that use equal parts of paint and thinner, so it's really thin ... again, apparently successfully. YMMV.

use a 10-15% acetone to paint thinner mixture and spray it on, with the compressor air set at around 30 lbs. set the gun spray for around a 4 inch spray width. this will give you a good flow and coverage. expect to use 1 quart of paint this way to cover the frame and fuel tanks from rear bumper to 12 inches under the cab.

i also put 2 coats of rustoleum heavy rust red primer on before the paint.

using acetone to thin the paint will result in a dry paint within 10 minutes, and it will be rock hard after 6-8 hours. 2 coats of primer an 2 coats of paint, and i have a litte over 1/32 inch covering the frame

I would coat the entire thing very well with rustoleum rust reformer, its similar to POR15 int hat it chemically seals off the rust.

I painted a toyota with it and then overcoated with satin black and had no issues.

I spray my underbodies with diesel waste oil and let sit for a couple days. It will kill any rust it comes in contact with and will leave a nice black look. It is also great for lubricating joints, bushings, springs, etc. at the same time.

i power wash the frame to get any flake rust off, then treat it with a good dose of phospheric acid. let it dry for 24 hours, then give another good coat. once the frame is solid black like it was painted, then i give it the 2 coats of primer, and 2 coats of paint.

for a full frame, expect to use 1 quart of primer and 1/2 gallon of paint.

spray guns

Ok never used a spray gun.. Going the rustoleum route.. Acetone sounds good to dry the primer/paint fast.. Going to paint in driveway and the faster it dries the less dirt/dust/crap gets trapped.

Question is what's a good gun?? Don't want the cheapest northern tools. Say $150 - $250 for a gun?

DO I need separate tips for print/primer??

Well be used for frames/priming truck parts.. Not really for painting the truck..

Thin Rustolium down with Mineral spirits. use 10%

As for a gun? The one TJC posted is perfect. It is just a cheap POS to lay down paint. PERFECT for using UNDER a truck.

But just to give you something to think about with using the rustolium.
I did my Bilco doors about 3-4 years ago. 1st they were sandblasted CLEAN then I used a foam roller to apply the paint. I have to redo them now. NEVER seen salt or abused. the sun TOTALLY destroyed them. Like I said, something to think about. Maybe tomorrow I can snap a pic for you.

I would MUCH rather go with POR, Chassis Saver, Master Series, Etc then topcoat with a GOOD tractor paint

I would love to see the after pics if and when you can share them.
I saw another vehicle that had been painted for 3 years and it looked as nice as when they shot it. Besides the wear and tear of normal stuff.
Search google for rustoleum corvair to see what I mean,

Ok I may do the following... Was thinking of POR-15 but then..

Industrial line.

Rustoleum V7400 system 340 VOC DTM ALKYD Enamal.
Rustoluem V7400 Damp proof red primer

Flat black for frame.

Rust-Oleum Industrial Brands - Industrial Brands Product Guide 2013 page 39 and 40.

Tractor Alkyd enamel - MF Charcoal Grey / or machine gray flattened.

The gray is for the 2 fuel tanks and maybe the drive shaft.. All frame will be flat black.. Just thought if I paint the fuel tanks and axle shafts gray it gives the bottom side a not so just paint it up black loks like shxxx.

After cleaning the frame and doing the above do you really think it well make any diff after truck bac in use.. I mean as for using krylon, or chassis saver, or other.. The frame as been neglected for 20 years. So after I clean it up and do the above - bet the frame well look wonderful..

Question is does one think I can use a harder in paint.. The Industrial rep of course said no. He may have people listening :-)..
