How do install my headers without lifting the motor?
I have an 86 f-350 4x4 4spd 460 that I got a set of Hooker Super Comp Headers for from an old friend of mine 4 yrs ago and finally decided to try and install them yesterday, since the exhaust donut gaskets and manifold gaskets where almost nonexistant.
I broke one bolt which I will drill out and retap the hole. I was missing 5 bolts and the rest of the bolts just about came out without much work.
Back to the headers, I can almost get the drivers side in from the bottom, which it may go in when I remove the front drive shaft, since thats where its hitting. But the PITA is the right side, there is no easy way of getting it in that I can see, without lifting the motor. Has anyone put these headers on their truck before that could give me some ideas on how to do this?
you can probably get away with unbolting the right side motor mount and lift the motor slightly leaving the left side motor mount alone, i had to do this same thing and i also have a 460 except in a f150 so mine was really tight fit lol
Thanks Barkin, I'll try that tomorrow since I got rained out for a few hours today and didn't get much done with it. The left side went in and bolted up nice and easy except that I forgot to reinstall the dipstick tube, so I had to unbolt it and am now fighting to line up the tube in the oil pan. I will let you know how it goes.
Bern I believe the part number is 6839. I will check on it tomorrow. I got mine from the guy I bought my truck from 4 yrs ago. They have been sand blasted so I repainted them with high temp paint, but the part number at summit is saying that they are supposed to be ceramic coated.
hey 86puller are those headers you got the long tubes or the shorties. im trying to find some new headers for my truck but dont want to buy none till i make sure they will fit with the front drivesshaft. also if you got the time and a camera if you could take a couple pics of the underneath so i might beable to see what it looks like (room wise).
thanks

For the passengers side, you may need to pull the starter, sneak the headers in, and then bolt the starter back up after they are in place. I've never installed those particular ones, but, I've never had to lift the engine on a Ford.
On most ford's it requires removing the starter and possibly shifting some stuff around. i've never worked on a 460 but I've never heard of having to lift the motor. If it's a matter of a few centimeters than you can put a plank of wood between your jack and the oil pan, loosen the mounts and lift it a bit that way. Good luck. I see a few bloody knuckles in your future.
Bern, the part number is 6839
Daphill Heres some pics of how it came out,

What a PITA putting these things in, I'd rather do a timing chain!! The hooker headers that I have, had a split tube on the right header that allowed for it to be installed in two pieces. So I didn't have to lift the motor or take the starter out. The dipstick tube had to be bent alittle, but i bent it a little too much so the dip stick doesn't go in all the way. It sticks out about 1 1/2".
Barkin I'll just put 8 qts in and make a new full mark on the dipstick, easy as that!! I just can't wait to start it so I can wake the dead with the open header!
I live diagonally across from a cemetary too, BUT I am also less than a 1/4 mile from the police station and they know my truck so I have to keep it somewhat calm. Just glad they haven't caught me or any of my friends putting rubber down on the street. Unfortunatly I can't put down rubber with boggers because the driveshaft usually drops to the ground and its front wheel drive time.
