I saw a small article in Truck Trend about SVT cramming the 380hp 5.4 in the Ranger and beefing up the suspension etc. for the little truck... If a Lightning 150 can smoke stuff imagine the Ranger's speed!!! Ford Please Produce this!! They want to extend their sport truck domination right?? Anyone else know about this?
I can't find the one about how they really build it, but it was a lot more than just changing a few parts. The entire front clip and suspension was rebuilt, the frame network redesigned, new driveline, everything was done . But you will never see Ford put this into production.
They will not produce it for the same reason they did not make the SVT Ranger in '86 that they built with a 302. They cannot build it to comply with safety regulations. The only way to keep the rear end of the truck from breaking loose is to cut the power out of the engine - which pretty much defeats the purpose of putting the 302 in it to begin with. That is not the only reason, but it is the largest...
It is a beautiful and extreme ride, and I would love to take a ride in it...
Someday....I'm going to put an OHC in my '77 F100. My 1995 Marquis with 150,000 miles on it gets 26mpg on the hiway. I would love to have the drivability and milage of a modern OHC and the looks of my '77. Someday...
In two weeks my wife and I are driving to Ohio and buying a '95 Ranger that was built by/for Summit Racing in '95. It has a 302 FOMOCO crate motor and aluminum GT40 heads. It's supposed to be pushing 350HP. It's been in storage for 4 years and has less than 10,000 miles on it.
According to the seller, it is in perfect shape! He has a deposit and hopefully I'll have the truck in two weeks.
I guess that is about as close to 'lightning engine in a ranger' as I'm likely to find....Can't wait!
I don't see how they are going to get all that power to the ground. They might have to advertise it as the truck able to do the longest burnout or something. Kinda dangerous if you ask me. For a factory performance item at least.
Hot Rod Magazine had a small article on a Ranger concept that had a Lightning engine ,trans and narrowed rear (for bigger tires). The concept beat the standard Lightning by a truck length in the 1/4. Sounds like a great combo to me.

Much as I like my Ford Trucks...I have to say I've take a good close look at Dodge's answer to the Lightning, up close and personal, and all i can say is this..putting the 5.4L in a Ranger is no where near enough to put a stop to the V10 Cobra engine.
Check it out at www.svt.ford.com/flash/index.html, this is in Fords SVT web site. I wish that they would produce this truck also but they do not plan to. I'll just put a 302 in mine for now.
