Anyone know where the 'Instrument cluster Microprocessor' is?

Okay, I took everything out of the dash and checked wires. I found no problems with the wires except for a slightly worn spot on the wire that connects to the end of the gear shifter to switch the O/D on and off. I taped that up. I plugged in the fuse without the radio attached, it blew. One thing; after the gauge cluster was disconnected for a couple of days, when I reconnected it (with the ignition off), I plugged in the fuse and it didn't blow. As soon as I turned the key and the cluster became energized, the fuse blew. I am leaning to a problem in the cluster. I suppose this will go to Ford.

Finally got it verified that the problem is in the cluster as the wire to fuse 41 has continuity and no issues. Probably the "delayed accessory relay" in the cluster. So now I am looking for a cluster. I called Ford and was told that if I bought a used cluster, it could not be programmed with my correct mileage, and that the only way to get the correct mileage is to buy from them at $412. Is this accurate? If they can program a new one why not a used one?

huh, interesting that the problem is in the microprocessor.

Anyway, you don't NEED to reprogram the cluster for your current mileage... you just need to report the correct mileage on the title if you sell the vehicle. Most state's titles have a check box specifically for this. I am guessing that they are not permitted to reprogram the used cluster because to do so could be construed as a felony.

I am OCD about certain things and one is that everything must work as it was originally designed. I found a shop that will do it for $205. Seems kind of steep to me. Also, are there any issues with swapping clusters and the computer rejecting it?

Swapped clusters. Did not fix the issue. I pulled the dash apart again and I tried pulling fuse 35 Instrument cluster. Then I inserted a new fuse into 41, and it didn't blow. As soon as I put the fuse back in 35, 41 blew again. That is apparently the reason no one could find a problem with the wire for fuse 41, as the problem seems to be stemming from fuse 35. I will now be chasing another wire. I went as far as I could through the harness tonight before dark and found nothing. I might have to pull the dash to check the wire completely.

Found no problems with wires. From the diagram fuses 35 and 41 power the cluster. I found no problems with the wires. WTF is the problem!?

The only thing 35 and 41 have in common are that they are both in the CJB, they share connector C220c and they both go the the battery saver relay in the instrument cluster microprocessor.

did you ever check for continuity from pin 15 to ground to see if there is a short? Check from c270a connector (pin 15) with 220c connected. Then check it again with C220c disconnected. you should not have continuity to ground. Alternatively, just pull connector C220c out and see if it still blows a fuse.

Did you get a new instrument cluster or a used one? maybe you got another bad one...

These drawings might help you diagnose the problem:

Okay, it is all fixed now. I just took it to the Ford dealer and come to find out, it was a shorted wire under the headliner near the dome light. Dropped the headliner, fixed the wire and no more problems. Thanks for all the help!!
