I have an '85 BII with the 2.8 engine and AC. During a recent tuneup I changed out the sparkplugs except for the one closest to the firewall on the passenger side. So far....I haven't been able to find a way to get to it. I also changed out the plug wires and it was all I could do to get the new wire on the old plug.
I have large hands so I guess that doesn't help!
Does anyone have a tip for me? I have a regular flexible rachet extension, but I'm almost sure I can't get it with the one I have.
Well...I don't believe access through the wheelwell is a possibility.
The problem is a big black box that is attached to the firewall. I guess this has something to do with the AC system...but I'm not sure of that. The back corner of the engine is in such close proximity to that box that I can't get in there to access the last plug on that side!
I go through the wheel well to get at it. It's true the A/c condenser is kind of close, but I think it's easier to get at it than from above. Turn the wheel so it's out of the way. Then looking in you can see the exhaust manifold. The spark plugs are just above the exhaust manifold. You won't be able to see the spark plugs, but you won't have to reach very far to get at them.
MrShorty is right, wheel well is the easiest way on 2.9/4.0 BII/Aerostars. I jack them up until the control arms drop, put jack stands on them and go to work. On the Aerostar 4.0, the easiest way to the #3 plug is from underneath, clear shot. Helps if the truck is cool (not cold). Also, good time to grease upper ball joints.
hmm ive had this prob on my 86 b2 but i was able to get it with a short extension and turning the handle of the ratchet to face the grill. only thing i can say wait till you do a compression test. you have to hold the gauge where you cant see it then take it loose and look at it then let the pressure out. oh these things have so much room under the hood lol.
