79 4X4 Power steering

I have a 79 F100 4X4 that I want to fit power steering to. In West Australia if I can't prove that power steering was a factory option on my model I will need to get engineering and government approval to fit it. I have had advice that it was and that it wasn't, can anyone direct me to somewhere to get it in writing if it was. Thanks

Hey Aussie. Documentation is what you need so I recommend getting your hands on anything and everything that shows that 79 4x4s came with PS. Overload them with proof and I bet they'll fold over like a deck chair.

Get catalogs, Ford brochures (reprints), Ford part numbers (like the steering box, pitman arm, tie rods, draglink, steering shaft), exploded diagrams, to prove it was an option.

Alternatively, go to your local Ford dealers' parts department to see if the department manager for microfiche prints or even the dealership's manager to pen a letter for you.

Say, will you not be required to also convert your truck to right-hand drive???

Thanks for that, finding the documentation is what I need. My ute is already right hand drive, I have contacted the local Ford distributor who tell me that it wasn't an option on the79 F100, but I had been told by the company I bought the Ford power steering box from that it was an option for the 4X4. I have spoken to engineers accosciated with vehicle modifying who tell me that if it was a factory option on an American F100 that they feel this would make it acceptable. The original Australian brochure doesn't list it as an option do you know of a web site that shows the American brochures

Thumbs up Found It!!!!

I googled around a bit and found what you are looking for:

1979 Ford Pickup - The Old Car Manual Project

The image you want to refer to is on row 5, second from the left. It says "Steering: Optional Integral Power".

But to truly state your case, save each image to a file, print the entire set (in color to make your point even stronger), and shove it up their.. oh, I can't say that... and provide them the proof.

Congrats, good luck, and shoot me a PM on the results. Can you send me a pretty blonde Sheila or two?

You could also buy a shop manual, and magazines with pictures of the power steering setup such as National Parts Depot, LMC, and Dennis Carpenter. Good luck with it. Also why do you have to prove it to the government that it was an option to put it on as factory.

MT-250.. good one from the Big Sky State! LOL.

I'm in CA where 75 and older vehicles aren't subject to smog tests anymore. I'd love to get a 78 or 79 Bronco but then I'd be subject to the air and enviro *****.

On the other hand, let's be glad we are not like Japan where vehicles are "timed out". Meaning, regardless of how many miles you have on the car it is required to be taken off the road due to its age... that's why we here on the west coast (and I'm sure in your state too) can get used Japanese engines with as little as 30K miles.. Ever here of "JDM" parts? It means Japanese Domestic Market and the parts are take-offs from dismantled/recycled vehicles.

Just wait till all the California people log on, youll then know every last detail, but for the jist of it is a stupid program by the government to supposively test vehicles to make sure they are not polluting too much inorder to make tax revenue in which they then go in the hole for to keep the tests going. Stupid government idiots.

I bought my 79 F-250 in California because it wouldn't pass the smog test and the guy didn't want to hassle with it. I'm sure someday Montana will start doing it just for the revenue.

Thanks for the efforts, the brochure looks just the goods. With the licensing issue it works that to modify a vehicle in any way, you must first fill in a 13 page document to get theoretical permission from licensing department, if they give permission you then need to pay an engineer, approved by them, to check what you want to do and/or direct what you need to do, after that you take the vehicle in and have it inspected (after paying the inspection fee of course). But if you are merely fitting a factory approved option you can just do it. The down side of not doing all this is that in the event of an accident (my wife will be using it to tow her horses and she has bent every other vehicle we have owned) the insurance company will refuse your claim because the vehicle has an unapproved modification and with my luck she will run into a BMW or Merc
