need help changing oil.

I cant get the oil filter cartridge cap off. The dealer should have done this three times already.

Is there a special wrench/socket?

Also,

The oil is very black and smells like strong sulfer. Could it be they never changed the oil? How would I know?

2009 PSD 6.4

36mm socket on the oil filter cap. Motorcraft filters only. If you still have the DPF intact and the truck is regenerating, then your oil is how it is suppose to be. There will be some fuel in it from the regen process. The oil will be pitch black in an EGR diesel before 1k miles on the oil change. That is how it is.

That worked. The cap was really tight. I had to use a breaker bar on it.

What is the cap to the right of the oil filter (to the front, Drivers side)? Is there a second oil filter in a 2009 6.4?

When replacing any of the filters, did you replace the 0-ring with the new one contained with the new filter?

Oil that ring with fresh oil before putting it down. Look at the cap it has the torque specs right on it.

Only use the motorcraft filters in this motor. Aftermarket ones claim to work but they tend not to fit right, starving the motor of oil.

Make sure you do not make the same mistake as the dealer. Those plastic caps are NOT designed to be that tight. I believe the torque spec is stamped on the cap itself.

The dealer tech was probably someone who didn't know what they were doing and figured too much is better than too little. If in doubt, find a torque wrench!

That is ONE of the fuel filters. The other is along the frame sitting horizontal by the drivers door. Have you been draining it?
