rockpile...that is a vague description. What kind of rattling? Is is coming from the engine compartment, under the truck, in the back? How severe is the shacking? Does it rock you in the seat when starting? Are there any sounds you hear that sound odd? The answers to those questions will help people provide more accurate assistance.
could be as simple as the starter needing to be replaced. Mine made some odd noises before I replaced it. However, check first to see that it is bolted all the way in. Maybe it got loose a bit and is 'grinding & knocking' the flywheel or something.
It has always done it at least since I bought it two years ago. I just replaced the clutch and the fly wheel has no damage and the starter is definitely bolted in tight. One guy said the ignition stays on to long. Could be worn out starter maybe?
That depends on what he meant by 'staying on too long'. Does it make the sound like when you try to start a car/truck again after its already running? If it does then I'd think there is something up with either the starter itself or the starter circuit since its supposed to cut power to the starter after you let go of the key. Does it keep going after the key springs back to 'run'?
is sounds like a sticky ignition switch. maybe a squirt of WD-40??? or maybe have to take apart and clean/fix/unsticky. I know that on a lot of 80/96 fords I've seen where the ignition works fine but it's so wore out that you don't even need a key to start it. wierd.
