Too much oil

I just did the oil change in my 04 Excursion and without thinking put a full 15 qts in. The previous owner or garage wrote 145 qts right on the fan shroud but I was just blindly filling it (I had three 5qt bottles of 10-40 Mobil 1) until the last bottle was empty. I drove it around and decided to wait until the morning to check it. Well, it is above the max line now and I'm afraid to drive it without draining the extra out. Unfortunately, I have to and I won't be able to drain it until tonight. How much trouble could this cause?

What a pain this is going to be. I will be buying a drain valve for it today!

Thanks,
Sam

You will be fine. Drain out what you need to as soon as you can reasonably get to it.

A Fumoto valve sure would be handy for this task.

If you used 10w40 you need to drain it ALL out and put in the proper oil. Sure it wasn't 5w40 or 15w40????? 10w40 is for gas burners.

I wouldn't even bother draining any. If you go to any dealer for your oil change, they are going to do the exact same thing you did. Three 5 quart jugs. Only the more enlightened here on FTE know to only use 14 quarts.

Matter of fact, I'm in the exact same boat. Dealer put in 15, and I'm just leaving it until my next oil change.

I agree except for one thing. I want to know if my level is ever increasing from fuel dilutiion. If the level is over the full mark to begin with, it is hard to detect this.

Nice catch, I completely overlooked that.

Yep, we agree on all that. Question is, is it worth it to me to drain 1 quart to make it through one OCI? Not to me. I'm much more annoyed by the fact that they filled me with 15W/40. I can't wait to get that out of there.

Seriously?!?!?!

I thought that since it was Mobil 1 it was all good. This is really not a good thing.

If you want to use Mobile 1, look for "Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel" oil. It only comes in 5w40 I believe. It may be a little tricky to find, i know around my area it is.

I missed this ............

You absolutely need the proper CJ4 or CI4+ rated oil!

Yeah, not good. I just figured it was a typo, since the only 10W/40 is a high mileage version gasser oil. You want to get that out of there ASAP.

Not only that but the next oil change will leave 3 to 4 qts. Of the bad mix in the engine. I would change the oil with the cheapest api rated oil, run it for abiut a 100 miles light loading and change it again. I may be a little **** but two oil changes may turn out to be the cheapest option.
