I just bought a 52? rat rod truck and need to get title. It has s10 chassi and the dash has been changed. The guy did give me a glove box that was in a box of stuff that has a vin on it. The vin is F1H1AT-XXXXX is this truck a 51 or 52? He bought the truck off of a guy in NC and he gave me the bill of sale that guy gave him. I need to know can I use this vin and get title? I do not want to finish truck if I cannot get title. I am in TN.

nice truck!!good luck on your title search ,,it seems the rules change right after you figger them out..so the best bet is to call your local DMV and get the straight and narrow rules from them..that way there is no misinformation..here they give you a list of what they want so you can check it off *** you get it done ..I have had no problem with any of the paperwork doing it this way..
I'm having the same problem right now, except the PO doesn't have a title or bill of sale. The glove box is missing, so the VIN info was taken from the frame. I not only can't get it transferred correctly, but also can't positively identify who the current owner of record actually is.
I am hesitant to buy it because I plan on spending a considerable amount of money restoring (customizing) it.
Guess I'll have to talk to the DMV too. Good luck!
By the way, nice looking truck. Love the front end! Is it just me or are the rear fenders on backwards? Cool!
NC titles all vehicles, so a bill of sale will do you no good here. Technically, if the truck is on a S10 chassis, it should be titled as a S10 with the Vin# on the frame.
You can get a title without all that but in TN it is a PITA. You will have to have the Vin#'s on both the F1 and the S10 researched to find when they were last titled. If the research show no record you can apply for a title by posting an insurance bond that will not be cheap.
When I bought my truck the guy I got it from was in Ga and he bought it from a guy in NC. He didn't have the right paperwork, so I made him do the legal route. He got the title from the guy in NC, then registered the truck in his name in Ga and then transferred that registration to me.
I'm not help with the title issue, but the rear fenders on your truck are reversed. The left side should be on the right side and the right side should be on the left side. I'm also noticing a 48-50 dash. I can see the slot for the radio in the center peeking out in the picture. However, the rear glass is wide like in 51/52 trucks. I wonder if the dash was replaced or the rear section of a 51/52 cab was grafted onto a 48-50 cab.
I agree with Kenjh, except I would invest in a phone call to the state DMV headquarters in your state capitol, not your local DMV office. Today many DMV sattelite offices are operated by outside contractors who hire minimum wage employees to staff it. They often don't know or want to know anything about special procedures or forms. Whatever you do DON'T go to a "title mill" that sell titles from scrapped vehicles. States are wise to that scam and you are likely to have to pay twice, once to the mill and then to do it right or have your vehicle confiscated.
Since the frame has been changed (the VIN # stamped into the frame is the only "legal" VIN) you may be required to register it under the S-10 ID or be given a new VIN # that will be stamped into it by a DMV inspector as a homebuilt vehicle. Be prepared to be asked for a bill of sale for each of the major components such as body, frame and engine.
AXracer, in Tennessee all of the registration processing is handled by the county clerks, who for the most part are very knowledgeable. But the bottom line is that he needs to get the paperwork from the S-10, and may need further paperwork for the other parts.
If your county clerk can't help you here is the state contact information, but they will ask if you talked to the county clerk first.

Thanks for replies, I know the fenders are backwards thats how you center wheels with s10 frame. I think if I could get title for cab then I would be ok. There are no police man going to crawl under and check vin if they could get under it. They eat to many dohnuts!
Small town living has it's advantages. I go to our local county court house and do my "amiable idiot" routine. The sweetheart ladies at the DMV counter rightly assume I need all the help i can get. They start digging out paperwork and rules and even fill everything out. I just need to bring what paperwork I have, pictures, and my checkbook.
FYI: the worse the vehicle looks, the less you get charged in sales tax here. "fair" market value. I learned this the hard way by bringing in pics of my baby Kawi after it was restored, instead of before. OUCH
