Finally got my 4 Core Desert Cooler in, well its been in for a week or two, filled up, just ran it to make sure no leaks in my 1955. Anyway.
I was wondering what the normal operating Temps are for the 460 are? Ive read threads about Thermostat probs, so I put in the OEM recommended 195 Temp. I got an electric fan that kicks on about 190. Dont have any Shroud on there because my clearance for the pully and fan is too tight, plus I got the fan a little toward the top and to the left(not exactly centered) but I think its OK. I believe its a 16 " fan.
Reason Im asking is, it is cool when running 20-50 miles an hour. Goes up to about 200-210, then goes back down to about 190 ish on the analog gauge. While Im idling it climbs a little over 210, maybe close to 220. NEVER goes above 220, but then goes down back down to 190ish. Am I good, or am I nervous???? Whats too hot for a 460????
Do you know if your sending unit is in the stock position? Also, if you can get your hands on one of those new fangled point & squeeze temp. checkers, check the temp in your radiator & compare it with your temp. gauge.
Well I believe its the Thermo opening and closing too why it goes up and down. Not sure on the stock sending position. Its in the top of the intake manifold in front of the Carb a little on the passenger side I think.
What you are describing isn't totally out of line, but your fan may be on the edge of not being adequate enough. Once you're driving over 20-30 mph, air is moving through the radiator faster than the fan will pull, so it seems you have no overall, out of the ordinary cooling issues. You just get a bit warm when you don't have enough air moving through the rad.
220F with a pressurized system isn't too hot from a boil-over standpoint, and you probably wouldn't hurt anything until you get closer to 240F, but it's something that would probably bug me, as well. (That's why the OEM doesn't put numbers on their gauges) I would work on getting more fan capacity at the radiator, and get more air movement at lower speeds. That should keep your temps more stable.
I think your 460 is okay, I hope it is because mine is about the same. I have a 192 thermostat , it runs about 195 to 210, 200 most of the time . No fan shroud, original 460 clutch fan set about 3 inches back from the radiator. Thats in the 90 degree temp. we are having now. If it doesn't get any worse I'm not going to change anything. I don't like fan shrouds at all and don't use them unless I have to.

You mean something more like this?? Its a FF dynamics 3000 cfm fan. I cant say what CFM I have now, its the Superflo 16 " from Mid Fifty I bought a long time ago. I would have to go look. Unless someone knows off the top of their head.
That's about where my 460 runs too. And that's hotter than my other motors. I'd like to cool it down a little. I've got the 190F thermostat and an aftermarket mechanical fan that is up real close to the radiator, but no fan shroud. I've looked for a fan shroud. Haven't seen anything that I thought would work. Guess I may make something.
And I've avoided getting stuck in stop and go traffic on 95F days. But in slow downs it goes up to 220 quickly. So it concerns me too. But i've never had a boil over at all. I think I've got a 10# or 13# cap? I can't remember. I'm using a big Summit aftermarket aluminum radiator--not sure of the specifics--couldn't afford more--but it seems to be doing OK.
As an update to this 460 temp discussion I just thought I'd mention that I recently replaced my 190F?--what was it?-already forgot--anyway with a 180F thermostat and I'm liking it better. Of course its not summer yet and maybe numbers will change but it operates at a lower temp idling or running etc. Maybe 8 degress less or so. I don't know why they suggest such a high temp OEM thermostat but I'm not seeing a reason to run so hot. So far seems good.
