Welcome to FTE and diesel ownership. These are great engines, easy to work on and about the cheapest of any diesel for parts. First thing I did when I got mine was tune up the glow plug and fuel systems. Make sure that thing will start when it's cold every time. Do you have maintenance records from the PO to see were he left off?

You will either love it or hate it, either way you will know fairly quick depending on how well it has been maintained. The engines themselves can take a lot of abuse and are generally good for a ton of miles. Like said above keep the fuel and glowplug system in good shape, I will go a little farther and mention the exhaust, if it has the 20 year old stock system it is 19 and 1/2 years past due to be updraded. I would also get some test strips and make sure the coolant is up to snuff.

Use only Motorcraft/Beru ZD9 ... Anything else very well could lead to serious engine issues.

There are THOUSANDS of Glow Plug threads pointing out why ... If you can't find one, say so, I'll either start mine and show you the reasons or point out the many others that are pulling the heads off their motors because of NON Motorcraft/Beru Glow Plugs.

to each their own, i prefer rotella-t but as long it's for a diesel motor. change every 2500-3500 miles depending on use and conditions you drive in.
