hey i got my new 7.3 finally! Its a dark blue 95 F350 xl. 37 inch bfgs with a 4 inch lift. it has been intercooled. 6637 filter on a K&N intake tube, injectors, and a TS six position chip. it just has stock straight piped exhaust but im probaly doing 5 inch mitre stacks also its soon to have a 17* hpop. the PO said that it has a smaller exhaust housing on the turbo and it does spool pretty good but im just wondering if you guys have any opinions on whether this sounds like a good enough turbo setup with evwerything else or if i should go to a different turbo or upgrade the stock one even more?
Stock housing is 1.15, the smaller one usually put on is 1.0. It will create higher egt's, especially when towing. What size injectors does it have?? Stage ones you'll be ok with the stocker if you don't get real crazy with it. The bigger sticks and more horseplay and the stocker won't last long. If there's no in/out play in the turbo (pull the intake tube and see) , little side to side is ok, and the wheel is not dusted or chipped it's probably ok. If you tow much you might want to put the stock housing back on.
If you plan on modifying it more I would go back to the stock housing or upgrade to a QSSB or H2E turbo. Like Darin said, the 1.0 housing is fine if you aren't towing and if you have Stage I injectors or smaller. Even then you can have high EGT's. The stock turbo can hold up to about 30psi pretty good but will wear out quick above that.
Also, do you still have the stock downpipe or has it been switched to a 3" downpipe?
I don't get it. Some people, like dizjim, say some guys are running the 1.0 housing wiht bigger injectors and they are have NO problems.
Let me help you. If you have ever ridden in a truck with the stock turbo and stock turbine housing with even 120cc injectors, the turbo spools QUICK. With stage 1's(160cc/stock nozzle) the turbo spools very quickly. There is no need for the 1.0 housing and all it will do is make EGTs higher because it will be creating more exhaust backpressure than necessary.
You can successfully use the 1.0 housing with stage 1's, but is the turbo going to be as efficient as with the 1.15? NO.. Will EGTs be a bit cooler with the 1.15? With higher power programs, YES. It can be done though. You would also see a bit better top end power with the stock housing vs the 1.0 with larger injectors.
