"Ignition module" causes one to think of a distributors internal electronic hall effect spark trigger module & your 97 Rangers engine doesn't have a distributor type ignition system, so it won't have an "ignition module"!!!!
Instead it has two coil packs whos grounds are switched by the computer, to make spark.
SO, if you are trying to find the coil packs, follow the spark plug wires to find the coil packs foward, on the passenger side of the engine.

pawpaw maybe he means ignition control module=icm. I think 97 was the last year with "the external"icm. OP you can go to rockauto and see a pic of it. try following the wires from the coilpacks they lead to the icm....

Could be, & the reason I'm not clear on what he's looking for is, I thought the 94 model was the last year that the ICM was mounted externally to the front of the lower intake manafold, which is on the drivers side????
Anyway maybe saintshockeydad will reply & set us straight on just what he's looking for on his 97, 4 banger!!!! lol

That's correct pawpaw. Depending on which motor, either '94 or '95 was the last year you'll find a "stand alone" ignition control module on a Ranger. Since then, the ICM has been integrated into the PCM (which means of course that the PCM now fires the coils directly).
Thanks for the ICM year location verification/confirmation Rockledge.
SO, there ya go saintshockeydad, if your looking for an ICM on your 97 4banger, the reason you can't find it underhood, is that it's been moved to & incorporated into the engines control computer & thats located in cabin, behind the glove box, on the firewall.
