Hey im new to this site, i heard about it from one of my friends. i hav a 1994 f-150 4.9L 300 4x4 5spd WITH 150,000miles onit. the only problem i have with her is when climbing the mountains i'll go from 70mph to 45mph before i'm half way up it. that with down shifting into 4th so it doen't slow down any slower. but it does great through mud and pulling thing on flat ground. so what should i do? I should probably add some Hp but i wouldn't mind getting a little more torque as well so if you could point me in the right directions or any ideals. thanks
If you are downshifting to 4th than you must have a 5 speed OD tranny...don't think it was designed to climb mountains with it in 5th/OD.
Having said that, there are innumerable postings on this Forum asking the same thing you are about gaining HP and TQ. Grab some snacks and drinks, sit back and start reading.
Also, tell us which gear ratio you have in the diffs, and what tire size you're running.
If you have 3.08 gears and trying to run oversize tires, you'll never get it to pull big hills with any speed.
Sounds like you need to ds one more gear. My stock 93 4.9 5 speed with a bit bigger tires than stack will lug up some pretty tall hills if shes empty so long as the are short duration. Any distance and I need to ds to 4th.
thanks for help what should i do for a cam and and stuff for more TQ so i can get through more mud? i'm about to bore out .040 over for HP. already fut a k&n air fliter in it so she can breath and i going to buy som headers what else do you think i can do?
The typical answer I have been given many times before on this and other sites is that for a cam a decent unit is made by Isky. It's computer compatible and you would need that for the engine you have in there now. Since you're planning on boring it over, you'll have to really check to see if you'd get the best benefit from a mild or heavier cam. That I cannot answer. Being it is an EFI, I've been told by many also that the stock exhaust is pretty good header wise already. the stock EFI exhaust manifold is a big mod that the carbed guys do for cheap instead of spending the money on expensive headers. I'm not a big performance guy, just relaying the info I've been given enough by more than one source to feel it's worthy. Hope it helps. Also, check out FORDSIX.COM. Lots of people there that really want the most out of their engines.
