I have an 05 73K miles with no mods. I was towing my boat (5000 LBS) last night out of Havasu on the I-40. As I was going up hills it overheated. I pulled over outside of Needles and saw it had lost coolant out of the cap. I waited for it to cool some and added water, then dropped the boat off in Needles. I made it home with temp only going up occasionally. Today, cold the degas bottle is empty.
I have a coolant system problem history that makes me want to get ride of the truck.
My initial problem was 4 years ago towing the same boat. I took it in and the replaced the cap and put a new coolant level sticker on it.
Everything was fine until a year or so later and they replaced the egr cooler oil cooler etc.
Last Nov at 65k they replaced egr cooler etc again after the fan kept coming on and I checked the coolant was low. After replacing egr and oil cooler they checked and said head gaskets were not leaking. I was going to be out of warranty in one more month.
I put in a coolant filter after the last problem thinking I must have alot of sand. I changed the filter after about 3 months and it was barely dirty. There are a lot of stains/spots on the underside of the hood and firewall.
If you are happy with the truck overall there is an extended warranty available from Ford. This will cover you for additional 2 years or 200,000 miles. You will need to purchase it before your existing warranty runs out. This will run about $2500. I know this is allot of money but if you keep the truck and have a major failure it is money well spent. As for you current problem I don't have an answer for you. But I am sure others will steer you in the right direction.
