I blew the engine (5.4L) in my 01 SD and found an 04' 5.4L for a good price, is this going to be a nasty swap or pretty easy? Is there an engine removal guide for the 01 SD gasser?
I believe the 2004 F150 came with the 3V 5.4L, so this won't be as simple a swap as installing another 2V engine. You are going to need to change out the PCM (you will need one from a 3V 5.4L super duty), etc.

Yeah a 3v swap is gonna be far more hassle than 2v, aren't they drive-by-wire too? If you find yourself a 2v it's not too complicated a job. depending on what it came out of there will be parts you have to swap from your truck, I've posted what I had to swap onto my new engine before in this forum, so if you want to see then try a search, might not be exactly the same for you, but it's gonna depend on the donor truck. take pictures every step of the way on disassembly, label every single connector. If yours is a stick don't pay any attention to anything that tells you that you need to remove the transmission first.
So basically, I would need a 2004 super duty ecu and wiring harness because a SD isn't drive by wire like the F150 (yes the f150 is drive by wire, I have the throttle body from the f150)? what did you label your thread when you did the swap? I've tried searching and can't find anything.
To the original poster in this thread, forget about the idea of even THINKING about this swap and continue your search for another 5.4L V8 2-valve engine. There are way too many differences between the two engines to even make it a worthy consideration. As a Ford dealer tech, here are the KNOWN differences:
-ETC versus mechanical throttle body
-returnless fuel system versus conventional return type
-3-valve VCT heads versus 2-valve heads
-Motorola type PCM versus Ford PCM
-4R75E transmission versus 4R100 transmission
Just by virtue of what I've mentioned above, this swap will become a total disaster to wire up, and fabricate parts needed to make functional. The minimal gains of the 3-valve engine, over and above that of the 2-valve engine hardly make it even worth considering.
If you can or want to you could change the top of your engine to the 3 valve engine and not worry about wiring and fuel lines, etc. The head gaskets are the same as per Auto Zone.
