Chassis dyno

Went to the chassis dyno today to tune in the 400 i built back in April.

Baseline TQ peak was 464ftlb. Baseline peak HP was341.6.

Peak tq was at 3300. peak hp @ 4400. TQ was above 440 from 2k-4100, and didnt drop below 400 until after 4600 rpm. HP @ 2500 was 202 and had a nice gradual curve until the peak @ 4400. After 4400, HP dropped off gradually to about 325 until we stopped pulling on it @ 4900.

Was able to tune another 17.3 peak tq ( 12-21 thruout curve) out of it, and another 15.2 peak hp (6-17 average thruout curve) with some timing curve , acc pump cam, and a/f changes.

final peak readings 481.3 tq (3700), 356.8 hp (4400) All readings are at the rear wheels, not at the crank.

First run after baseline gained top end but lost bottom end. Changed timing and curve, gained the bottom back, plus some. 3rd run, everything seemed to work very good together.

Engine is a 400 .020 over with a set of TMI pistons, 2v stock heads, a comp cam, single plane intake and holley carb. C6 trans with np203 t-case. Single 3" exhaust.

Thoughts??

That sounds like a great build. Some great numbers, even given the altitude. Thanks for sharing!

This is the cam / component setup i am using. COMP Cams K32-224-4 - COMP Cams Magnum Hydraulic Cam and Lifter Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com

The cam is rated to 5,800, but with our thin air, and the 90 degree temps during my dyno session, and the stock 2v heads, i lost about 1,000 on the range of the cam.

After the dyno , i wished i didnt live at 9200 feet, and that i didnt run thru a t-case!!!

I wonder what numbers would look like at the crank?

Add 25% or so, that will get you in the ballpark, or so I've heard.

+25% at the crank wouldnt be too bad of a crate engine, would it?

601.6 ftlb TQ and 446 HP at the crank would be like a dream

Hhhhm, that looks too high. I didn't run any numbers, just repeating the usualy "20% drivetrain loss" that you always here.

Those are great numbers, maybe there's another way to "guesstimate" flywheel hp/tq....

It does look too high, I think drivetrain loss must be more of a variable than a percentage.

That's some outstanding numbers, you've got to be happy with the outcome! Way to go.

How do you have your cam timing set. are you running headers.looks like good numbers. I didnt think with stock heads that it would be that good.

I didnt even degree the cam in (probably should have), and the crank keyway for the crank gear is set 0 degrees.

I am running headers (flow tech cheapies) and the exhaust is y piped to single 3" shortly after the headers (under the t-case crossmember) then runs into a flowmaster RV muffler.

Im thinking of trying to find another 20 ft lbs somewhere and trying to find another 25 or so in HP SOMEWHERE to try to get 500 ft lbs and 380 HP to the ground, then seeing what numbers i can get with the nitrous. I am hellbent on 500ftlb and 380hp now that im this close. Im hoping that with a few changes that wont effect the ability to drive the truck every day (its my only vehicle) that ill able to get these numbers atleast once.

I think your gonna loose the reliability of daily driver if you keep pushing the numbers up. I would still do it just to see if will then tame it down for everyday. I am getting ready to fire my 400 up soon and have similiar build as you.I was hoping for 350hp 425 ft lbs. I am going to use my truck to tow a lot and want to keep rpm as low as can for torque curve. Thats why I was curious about cam timing.Do you think a bigger carb will get more hp. maybe even try straight 20w syn oil.Thats what they test with in engine masters comp.

The truck is the only vehicle i own, so the daily driver status is something i need to keep... It doesnt do too bad with those numbers, tears up u-joints mainly. I have been hitting it with a 100 shot of nitrous on top of the engine power lately, and no adverse side effects as of yet.... I think i nailed a good , powerful, reliable 400 that can take some abuse.
