Several weeks ago I sent an e-mail to Walmart's web site requesting Chevron 5w30 be stocked. I walk in to my local wally yesterday and guess what I see! At $1.08 a quart for hydrocracked/isodewaxed oil, this has to be THE deal in oil. I just had to buy a few quarts. It will take me months to use all the oil in my garage!
The Chevron Supreme you purchased for $1.08 is a great deal. It has to rate in the top 5 oils for this weight. I wish Walmart would stock it in the 5W-20 as it is also highly rated.
Chevron user here too.10W30 at Wally world for 1.08 aquart all day long! And Motorcraft filters for 2.77 too.Going to be switching to Mobil1 next oil change.Saying goodbye to Chevron.
<<<Going to be switching to Mobil1 next oil change.Saying goodbye to Chevron.>>> Why? Just curious. I toyed with the idea of using synthetic, but when you can get a great group II+ dino for just over $1.08 a quart, I can't see the cost/benefit at work. Thats just my opinion, which is wrong as often as its's correct . Feel free to flame me now ( I am a firefighter, I have layers of Nomex, you won't hurt me).
My dad has his own backhoe/dozer company back in Louisiana and has been using Chevron products for years. He also questions my reason to switch to Mobil1.From what I have read about this synthetic vs dino debate, ive based my conclusion on more people saying if you are going to keep the truck for a long time use Mobil1.Is there anyone out there that can argue this point?I do my oil changes every 3k miles religiously!Help me,the dark side(Mobil1) is pulling on me!BTW,I have almost 84k miles on the truck.
In regards to your switching to Mobil one. Is it a good oil? Yes. But it no longer is a true synthetic. The old Tri-synthetic was, the Super Syn is not. If you have a situation where you need extended oil change periods or have an extreme heat environment then I would recommend the Mobil one. Otherwise, the Chevron not only will do the job but exceed your needs.
Hey Fat,
You know me and dino...we have a good relationship.
However, you'll never get me to argue that Mobil1 isn't a good oil; it is a very good oil.
I think much of what we have discovered here also supports the fact that big name dino oils are good as well (subject to personal preference and opinions)
I've been using the Shell for about 3 years now and think it is doing just fine. But, I tell you, I think the Chevron might be "better" just because it's a group III oil and I think the Shell is group II.
I guess it all boils down to this, I believe your engine is as likely to last a long time using Chevron Iso-syn as it is Mobil 1. I continue to believe that a motor's life span is largely predetermined the day it rolls off the assembly line. By that I mean: take your motor, run Chevron or Mobil 1, the motor is as likely to last as long with one as it the other. Both oils, given regular changes and good filters, will allow the engine to run as long as it will run until something breaks, or is just flat worn out. My guess is, that "something"-whatever it is, is not gonna be something that was due to NOT using a "fully synthetic" motor oil (i.e. Mobil 1).
I fear I am rambling......Does this make any sense ?????

Brian, no you are not rambling and yes you are making sense. I considered the Mobil 1 for 2 reasons: 1) the Ford 5w20 recommendation (M1 30 weights are nearly thin as 20 weight) and 2) cold start performance. I'm taking my chances on the first one because I plan on keeping this truck WELL past warranty. I found that Chevron 5w30 has a -45F pour point and good cold cranking properties. About 3 to 5 degrees F is the coldest we have seen around here this winter. I have no worries it will work for me. I figure dino has worked great for me for 20 years, why switch now.
Ok,now that i'm convinced about Chevron, why should I use 5w30 instead of 10w30?I have a 97 4.2 with almost 84k miles and have been using 10w30 since I bought it with 62k miles on it.I live in Florida and do all highway driving.Dont tell me to use 5w30 because Ford says so;tell me "why" Ford says so!
I mentioned 5w30 due to my location. I use 5w30 because of our winters with zero degrees or colder. 10w30 should be perfect for your climate and 10w30 is still within the GF3 rating so it should be a great product and is easy to find.
Sorry, I missed the second part of your post. I think Ford recommended the 5w30 due to slightly better fuel economy and the fact that it would ensure easy winter starting for folks in cold climates. 10w30 is the number one selling grade in America so you are in good company!
I too have the 4.2 (2000 model) and will hit 85,000 miles next week. Aside from the factory fill, all it has seen is 10W-30. I believe, but have no proof, that in moderate climates (like me in Alabama and you in Florida) 10W-30 is the best all around oil. I plan to keep my truck at least 6 more years and then give it to my son when he turns 16. If it makes it, it will be a strong case for dino. But....that's 6 years away! I don't expect everybody to hang around and wait!
Brian A
Brian, it just makes sense to me that 10w30 is the best all-around oil for moderate climates beacause it has a minimal viscosity spread and still gives cold start protection during mild winters.
