At This Point, I'm Baffled: Stereo Problem

1990 F150 4x4 351W if it helps at all. I installed a new stereo in my truck not long ago and it worked great. I've had problems with stereo's before. I've kicked a couple to get them working, I've blew up a few when they decided to take a dump on me, and I've replaced enough to know how to install them. However, this new stereo, a JVC KD-S14, decided to play a game with me, and I'm none too pleased.

I decided to take a short-cut on my way to the grocery store, through a small field I'll happen across from time to time. When my truck hit a bump (as I've done thousands of times before and never had a problem) all sound emitting from the stereo ceased. No speakers. Easy, I figured. So I checked all the wires, all the fuses, re-installed the stereo just to be sure, double checked my speaker connection, and still nothing. The stereo works fine but I don't have any sound. CD's won't work, radio won't work. But otherwise the stereo functions just as it should. I figured it was just wires, but after checking all the connections and found them to be secure, I'm a little lost.

If anyone has any insight, or maybe know something I might have missed... that'd be really helpful. I hate driving without music.

Thanks!

Do u have another head unit u can try? Or maybe return that one? Its possible when you hit the bump it broke a connection internally in the head unit.

God I hope not. I actually got the stereo from another truck I had. Took it out before I sold it so there's no returning it, unfortunately. I may have my stock stereo laying around, but I'm sure by now it's lost amongst a pile of parts and junk. I'll have to dig it up to see if that works. Man, if just a little bump killed my stereo...... My next thread will be titled, "Stereos and Shotguns" if that's the case.

Sony Xploders? Better than nothing, I suppose. Seems the best luck with stereo's I've had, too, are the cheapest ones. I had a Pioneer that was the biggest pile I've ever seen, but that thing wouldn't quit. This JVC just pisses me off. I'll install the stock stereo tomorrow, while the sun is out and see if it works.

Cold solder joint. Definatly could be effected by a sudden bump. If all wires and fuses have been checked and rechecked I would try another head unit. If that doesnt provide any results then I would assume the pre-amp, or processor has a bad solder joint that failed with the impact. Bye bye old truck deck, hello new double-din sat/nav/dvd screen!

I have had Sony's, and Kenwoods. I really like the Kenwoods. I had one then put it in 3 different trucks and I never had a problem with it. I could hit bumps without it skipping too. That thing was a rock.

This may not be the case...but I have had 2 Alpine units that have a function called "defeat on/off" which when this function is turned on it ceases all sound from the speakers. Go through your manual (if you still have it) or play around with the functions on the deck and see if there is anything like this.

Radio wires and wiring diagnosis: Crossed Wires?

WikiAnswers - Need Radio wiring diagram 1990 Ford Pickup F150
>>Were missing the point!
I have been working on the problem too. 4 headunits, 6 different re-wirings. It appears my ground is getting power. If worse case I will re-wire, but:
We're missing how a good harness pin-out should actually read on a Multi-Meter and how to diagnose these connection problems.
Anyone have anything bright to acknowledge towards a good diagnosis?

It took a lot longer than expected but after some testing, the stereo is toast. Stock stereo works fine. Last time I'll ever own a JVC.
