Auto Locking Hubs

Looking at a 92 F150, 351, 4spd auto, 4WD, supercab, LB.

It has manual locking hubs and I was wondering is it worth it to swap the manuals for auto locking for the convience of not having to get out and lock them in or would I be better off just sticking with the manuals?

How reliable are the autos vs. manuals? I know autos are way more expensive.

I don't do any heavy off roading, just don't like slippin and slidin around in the snow and I don't like having to get out and lock them in in -15F weather. (I have a 90 Bronco II with manual hubs right now)

Auto Locking Hubs

yo J,
Stay with the manual hubs is my advice. Our 96 Bronco's oEM auto hubs blew out at 30k miles despite maintenance. However we did go off-road and over the sand on beaches in NJ and VA once a week on average.
Also, the auto hubs are very expensive: $200.+ per side on our 96.

In weather where you may encounter snowy/slippery roads, you can lock the hubs when you start out and then shift to 4hi and back again to 2 depending on conditions.

Auto Locking Hubs

I would stick with the manuals. My truck originally came with auto hubs. But at about 60,000 miles, while triing to back up a snowy hill the hubs started to lock and unlock. It really pissed me off, and I knew that it wasn't good for the rest of the drivetrain. So swapped them out for a set of Superwinch maunals. Most of the time in the winter I just leave the hubs locked in so I don't have to get in and out. It doesn't cause a whole lot of extra wear on U-joints. Hope this helps Paul

Thanks guys, I think I will stick with the manuals.

I picked up the truck today for $3200.
