i have an 84 F250 with a 6.9. ive looked around for headers, y-pipes, and the like but havent found anything really cool. id like to replace the y-pipe and straight pipe it the rest of the way, maybe dual it somewhere. what size pipe should i use (from the 2-1 merge and back), and does anyone make y-pipes or headers for my engine?
Stans Headers are the only ones made for this engine and they are pricey at around $750. If you keep a single exhaust, 3" or 4" will be fine.
There are few if any exhaust kits for these old IDI engines. You basically piece it together or have a shop do it.
Straight piping the 6.9 is REALLY loud with a very noticeable cackle unless you have a turbo. Depending on where you live, it will not pass a safety inspection without a muffler.
you got to get to know your local exhaust guys even if you just take it in for grease or a oil change once in awhile they have the benders for the pipe to hook you up right with a nice set of dual or custom y pipe mod collecting into a 3 or 4 inch pipe be carefull buying parts and just slapping it together you might be fixing it weekly go to summitt and buy a header collector flange for a build your own header kit this will collect 2-2 1/4 -3" have the muffler guys split your y pipe if its solid and weld in the flange then go 3" out or larger see how big a pipe they can bend first if you want to have them take it over the rear axle big elbows are expensive to buy if the cant bend them strap clamp the pices or have them miged or tiged .This all sounds good but ask the muffler guys if they can handle this before handing over the keys each shop seems to have a good guy for this some do it in there off hours and are real reasonable
