My ammeter is bouncing. I know it is a voltage spiking because the lights are dimming in concert with the ammeter bounce.
So do I look at the alt or the regulator? I am leaning towards the regulator. Does the regulator have a separate ground wire? I have some rotten ground wires that I am not sure where they are supposed to go. Maybe this is my problem.
The VR grounds through its base, but it grounds to a metal plate that's bolted to a plastic inner fender - there is a ground wire from that plate to the outer fender (steel), and yes you need it to be there.
does the RPM have any effect on what its doing? if so its the alt. if not it might be the regulator.
1. No. RPM has nothing to do with it. 2. That was the question wasn't it?

I'll bet that is one of the rotted off leads. I'll work on the grounds first. Thanks.
