i want to replace the injector return lines and need to know what style i need. my truck has the late style on it and the book calls for the early style? i dont know if this may be part of fy starting problem because i have the wrong style on it or not. the truck is a 1988 with a 7.3l
It doesn't matter what style caps you put on, as long as the plumbing gets the fuel back to the return line to the tank. Some guys switch some of the caps because a couple of them are difficult to get, as they aren't in the 'standard' sets.
Turbo models are done a little different due to Turbo location ...
I think the 88 is done the old way with 3/16" hose, the IP vents into a metal line that runs to the back of the motor, however I am not positive! If it does you should convert it to the newer arrangement.
Optimally they would go like this ...
The return line from the IP goes to the first Injector on the left bank through all the Injectors to a return tee at the back of the motor ... This allows air to bleed from the IP as well as coolant for the left bank of Injectors!
The return line from the filter head goes to the first Injector on the right bank and through all the Injectors to the return tee at the back of the motor ... This allows air to bleed from the filter as well as coolant to the right bank of Injectors!
For the Injector Installation Kit installation You can follow Starmilts Humorous Fuel Return Replacement Procedure, I like to cut the 6 pieces between the Injectors to 4-1/16", Use a sharp razor blade to cut the hose and Vaseline to lubricate the o-rings.
For proper fuel system bleeding you can use steps 1 through 4 and 13 through 15 of the Fuel Filter Replacement.
I'll reinforce Festus's comments - Get the Viton O-Rings, and do the vaseline! I just went through the pain of three re-installs of the lines and its a real PITA to keep suffering from fuel leaking and air intrusion from bad sealing!
