I have a 97 f250 7.3 and recently had an injector start the trademark knock. The check engine light is now on and I have verified through a scanner that an injector needs to be replaced.
Basically, I just want a second opinion on the adverse effects of running a truck with an injector malfunction. A local mechanic told me that running this year of 7.3 with a bad injector with not damage the engine or any other components for that matter but will only result in a decrease of power.
I am moving cross country in a few days and am planning on fixing the injector as soon as I get there but if there is any possibility of damage, I will try to get it fixed asap.
The only issue that I could see is that the failing injector might cause that particular cylinder to get hotter than the rest. Probably not an issue unless your towing/pulling.
It sounds like your pressed for time, but depending on how many miles are on the truck I'd look it getting all the injectors re-mand. If one fails, the rest are usually not very far behind.

Any educated opinions appreciated!
If you want to make sure the injector wont be shoving fuel in that cylinder then remove the valve cover and unplug the bad injector. You will run on 7 cylinders then.
It depends...if you're pushing fuel out of one or two holes your injector basically turns into a cutting torch and will kill a piston. I wouldn't run it.

Injectors typically don't knock when they 'go bad'. Usually they just quit firing and don't harm anything.
If there's a knock, then something is going on. A knock is metal to metal that shouldn't be there. Or possibly flooding the cylinder with fuel from a cracked nozzle which will soon burn a hole in the piston.
I hate to say but you need to address the issue ASAP.
