Smells Like ?????

OK,

Here's one for the experts.

2004 F350 Dually. Crew Cab, long bed 4x4 V10.

Here it is. Every so often when I park the truck the right side rear tires have a smell of rubber.

I'm not an aggressive driver, I don't make hard corners, no burn outs, nothing on those lines.

I can't even tell you WHAT I can do to reproduce the smell. It's happened 4 times in the past 2 weeks. Once there was a little smoke coming out of the wheel. Thought it may be brakes, but brakes shouldn't smell like rubber. At least none that I have seen in the past.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Glenn

Good thought Sam,

But the tires do not have any more heat on them than would any other tire at any other time. and the exhaust exits far behind the tires. Although I did not look for an exhaust leak, but I would think I would hear that.

Check for any debris that might have got stuck in the brake?

Check the e-brake on that side. It may not be releasing properly.

You may also want to pull the wheels and see if there is any evidence of a leak from the brake caliper, brake hose or axle seal area.

Also, thump the inside tire and make sure it is inflated.

I'm sure you already have but make sure something's not stuck in between the tires and rubbing as they flex. Also, if pressures are low enough the tires will touch during the bottom of their rotation.

I agree with rick. Check air pressure of the tires and make sure nothing is rubbing. Do you have rubber budflaps that may be hitting exhaust?

hot means trouble is coming.

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like the emergency brake is not releasing. I know someone who had that happen. Smoke would come out from around the wheel. I don't remember if he described what it smelled like. I had a brake cylinder go bad once. It wouldn't release the brake pad from the rotor. I would see smoke coming out, but I never smelled it. Didn't take long to ruin the rotor, and fry the pads. I had to replace the pads, caliper, and rotor. I hope you find the problem.
