what causes....

hello all. first time post so bear with me. i have an 01 supercrew lariat 2wd 5.4 auto with 135xxx miles on it. routine maintenance conducted with no serious issues. a month ago i completed a cross country trip from nc to ca. here's the deal: yesterday i was driving on the interstate at about 70mph and the truck died, as if i turned it off. i managed to get it to the shoulder and tried to start it. it cranked but would not start, almost as if the fuel pump quit. i thought ok it's time for it to go. so after about 15 minutes as i was sitting there waiting for a tow, i tried to start it and it fired right up, no problem. idled fine, so i drove it home (about 5 miles)shut it off and attempted to restart it. same thing- cranked/turned over but wouldnt start. let it sit 20 minutes and it fired up. this morning went out to start it and it fired right up. drove it 8 miles to the shop and by then the idle was terrible, dropping down to 400 or 500 then back to 1000. its not showing any codes at the shop nor is thecheck engine light on. can someone please point me in the right direction. i'm leaning towards the IAC but dont know if that would cause it to shut off at 70 mph? Please help!

kinda hints of a bad ignition module....but it would be wise to run codes 1st and see what is tripped.

so what is missing spark or fuel?
when it is not running after it stalled...can you remove the air filter and give a whiff of starting fluid as someone else tries to start it....will it run briefly then?? if so then the fuel pump is going south

There is no ignition module in his truck.

Get a fuel pressure reading and monitor it when in failure mode. Your symptoms are of a failing fuel pump, but may be caused by other items. The IAC cannot cause a stall above idle speed.
