Brake Issue - Master Cylinder or ABS?
Hi,
I have a 2001 Sport Trac, and recently had a problem come up with the brakes. When stopping, during the last bit of deceleration, I get some feed back from the pedal.
The vehicle was also pulling to the right a bit. So I replaced both calipers (they had minimally 160K miles on them), new pads, but the rotors were still good. The problem was still there. The ABS Sensor has also been replaced.
The feeling in the brake pedal is like there is some resistance, and then it goes down another inch or so, but that is only once I am going slow. So if I were stopping from 40 MPH, I would not experience this until I was down below 15mph or so. Little resistance for a second, then an abrupt stop.
Any suggestions?

The ABS diagnostics are networked with the OBDII port, but the standard consumer-grade scan tool will not access the ABS computer (or transmission, body control modules, security, PATS, etc.). If your ABS light is not on other than during the bulb test when you first turn the key to Run, you probably don't have an issue with the ABS.
Are the brake pads wearing evenly? Have you inspected the rear parking brake shoes? Don't ignore that this could be a collapsed (internally) brake hose.

FYI, Just because the ABS light is not on doesn't mean there is no code. My Mountaineer had a code in the ABS system and the light was not on. The light came on a couple times for about 20 seconds, but went back out and was out for about a week when I checked to see if there where any codes. When I hook up my ABS scan tool, there was a code.
