Brake Question

It's not the typical disk conversion question, I'm actually leaning toward keeping all the drums on. The question is on a '66 F 100 do the drum brakes automatically adjust themselves?

One of mine does, the right front seems to work great unfortunately the rest are slacking on me. If you some body stops short in front of you and you gotta stab'em hard, you'd better be haning on! Guess I'll take them apart and clean/inspect and see whats going on. Thanks much, Scott.

Hey Not Steve,

I left the drum brakes on my 66 and put all new parts all the way around, springs and all. The one thing I learned from NumberDummy about the adjusters is they only work in reverse. So once you get the brakes all in good shape you need to back up, and hit the brakes a couple of times to adjust them. I think I spent a total of $350.00 and replaced all cylinders, shoes, springs and drums. Not to bad for knowing I can stop.

And you can put them in basakwards! so be careful and do one side at a time.

Is not fun auto adjusting the brakes out every time you stop and it gets harder to stop..........My dad was PEEVED to say the least. Hey i was 11...

A couple years ago I did all four drums, shoes, wheel cylinders , and rubber lines. The springs and such looked to be OK so everything got cleaned up and bolted back on. They worked pretty good so I left them as is, it didn't get driven much so it was fine. Now, however, it's back from the machine shop and the ole 300 has been done up pretty nice and it gets driven more so it needs to be able to stop. I guess sitting idle for a year or so isn't so good for them.

The brakes on my 66 had been replaced before I got the truck and work great I adjusted them once because the truck hadn't been driven for a year or so before I got it. If I want to stop I hit the brakes if I need to stop fast I have to pump them once to get a little more pressure and sometimes again if they lock (rarely) I mostly just drive with the mindset of what can or will fail today and how do I avoid wrecking as long as you know what you have to do or might have to do and don't panic you should be fine also use engine braking to keep the stress off bad brakes.
