Getting the spark plugs out
I'm having trouble unscrewing them. First of all I can't get a good grip and when I do they wont screw out. Also, I've got some aluminum around my spark plugs and on my exhaust manifolds. What exactly is it? It looked like it served no purpose so I bent it out of the way, then put it back.

Aren't you using spark plug socket? That, a few extensions, maybe a u-joint, & a ratchet always works for me.
The aluminum is heat shielding for the wire boots.

If the plug will move at all, you can usually remove it by working it slightly, sideways and back-forth.. You can also apply some wd 40 to try to lubricate the threads (as if I could on the passenger side plugs!). Also short piece of vacuum hose will help in tight spot when you get them freer.
