I looked at an 03 excursion v10 yesterday they are asking $9995, salesman said that the head gaskets were leaking and the only thing they did was put bandaide into the coolant system to stop the leak, i was wondering approx. how much it would cost me to get them replaced. it has 155k miles. I really want this truck but the head gasket problem is making me think twice. I have never owned a gas vehicle and this would be my first. i would also like some info on other things i may need to replace
I hate to tell you this but my guess and it is only a guess but I would think the bottom line to do it right is about 3000.00. Some shops remove the engine for this some just pull it foward.
Because you should also have new exhaust studs installed, gaskets, spark plugs and COP boots. Of course an oil and filter change and have the heads magnafluxed, plus I don't know what else. It also could have a cracked head.
This is an iffy situation.
If you don't want to do the work yourself you may be better off finding a good used engine and do an engine swap. But even so you will still need plugs, COP boots, exhaust studs, exhaust gaskets, oil and filter change. This sounds minor but its still nearly 300.00 for the parts above not counting the engine and labor.
I would pass on this one. I bought mine 02 V10 XLT with 113K miles last year for $7980. Had to replace the battery and alternator after a few months. Recently replaced plugs and boots because I wanted to as a PM, not that something went wrong. Changed all fluids and replaced tires, shocks, and did an alignment.
