So i have a regualr cab long bed ford f150 4wd with out the dual shock option. So what happened is I was taking the babe out for a joy ride when I hit a big old ditch on the side of a dirt with my front drivers side tire. Now on the left side I have a squeak that happens all the time when driving. It comes from the front passenger side suspension right up near the wheel. The sound is eeeereh eeereh. Like an old door hinge squeaking and it increases with speed. It does this with our with out the wheel beeing turned. I'm thinking ball joints but hell I'm not quite sure whats going on because I can't find much play down there.
any thoughts here guys. Taking the day off of work tommorow since I'm feeling sick and haven't had any days off in a long a** time. Thought I'd try to tackle it then.
So I isolated this squeak after a long day of pull twisting jacking the truck up etc. The whole system is basically worn out so I will be doing ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and shocks. So I was looking through my Haynes and all and wasn't all that impressed with their explanation depth but still it doesn't seem too hard so I've cleared my weekend. Figured all of this would take a good 8-10 hours... any how I'm looking for any advice/stories/warnings etc before I get started.
Specifically I am looking at the instructions for the knuckle, spindle, and 4wd hub removal and see that the vagueness could be a potential issue...
its all pretty simple just remember what goes where when removing old stuff. 4wd hubs and what not seem to be made out to be harder than what it really is
Compared to what haynes made me think the 4wd hubs were hilariously easy. Got new tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, spindle bearings, and brakes in the baby now. anything I should do before I start driving it around. Alignment would probably be a good idea yeah? anything else. Should I grease up these moog joints with the zerk fittings or do they come pre greased?
put new shocks on but my springs bushing are starting to look pretty old. squeak problem is gone but when I have some more money the whole front end will get an overhaul. Started out as a "fun driver" build and now all the sudden I'm starting to collect parts for body work etc. a nice little resto sounds fun too though...
I'm driving out to Baltimore in 2 weeks for school so I'm gonna have a trusted family friend mechanic do a once over Monday. He knows I do all my work my self and has known my dad for near 30 years so he won't be puling any funny business.
