Is there a way to calibrate the speedometer on a 91 Ranger? This is my son's truck, and he has about a 12 mph error. When going around 65 mph, the speedometer reads around 77 mph. I have read numerous posts on this topic, but none of them seem to fit our problem. When we drive 65 according to the speedo, the GPS shows around 54 and the traffic backing up behind us supports the fact that speedo is way off! I had to replace the transmission recently, and the problem is the same. Tire size has not changed since the truck was new. Any ideas?
When you replaced the transmission, did you use the speedometer driving gear that came with the replacement tranny. If so, it may have been set for a different axle ratio than you have. If that is the case and you have the old tranny, use the gear from it in place of the one you now have. Otherwise you can get the proper gear from a Ford dealer. All they need to know is the ratio of you rear axle.
Thanks all for the replies. Maybe I did not make myself clear. With the old transmission the speedo just decided to go nuts out of the clear blue one day. Then when I replaced the transmission, I thought this would solve the speedo problem, but the error was identical. I tend to lean away from the transmission being the cause. Could the problem be in the speedo itself?
Yes it could be the speedometer since nothing else has been changed. Two options. Find a speedometer repair shop to fix it or replace it with one from a wrecking yard. Only thing about that is the indicated mileage will not be what you have. Speedometers that will work: Ranger, 89-94. Explorer,90-94. Bronco II, 89-90. Had one on my 90 Ranger that would increase the speed on me in the winter. Summer time it was ok. Had over 239,000.
This might be stupid, but when they replaced the transmission, did they also replace the speed sensor?
I don't know anything about your ranger, or even speed sensors for that matter. doh.
..........
Howdy
Today I was working on the speedo. I replaced the worm gear on the odometer and not teh speedo is running fast. Does any one know if the speedometer can be recalibrated? No gear have been changed on the tranny. Just the worm gear on the speedo....thoughts????
