Hello I just changed the left (drivers side) timing chain cassette and before putting everything back together I want to make sure I have the timing right. I haven't installed the jack shaft chain or its tensioner etc either, I have the crank key way facing up which should be #1 cylinder on tdc. What I don't know is if I moved the cams a little over the coarse of working on it, can someone give me a quick turtorial of how the cams should be facing, I do have both valve covers off to see the cams, my haynes book isn't very helpful...Thanks
You need the special tools to time the engine properly. There are no marks on the cams and none of the sprockets are keyed. Also when you take the jackshaft chain off the right cam can move. The procedure is take out all the rockers, loosen both cams, install the locking tool and the holding tool on each cam, install the tensioner tools, install the jackshaft chain and torque to spec(new bolt needed), install the timing cover, balancer, and torque to spec(new bolt needed), install crank tool on balancer and turn against block(this puts the crank in time), torque both cam bolts, reinstall rockers. If the timiing is off you will bend valves pretty quickly.
OTC makes them and I think the set is around $400. I doubt a parts store has them. Maybe you can rent them from a Ford dealer if the service manager will agree to it.
Found a set on amazon for 200, but screw it never gonna work on this engine again it'll be cheaper to take it to the dealer and get it timed and then tow it back and finish it up..
I usually charge $200 to time a SOHC on the side. Maybe you can buy the tools and then sell them when you are done to recoup some cash. Is the engine out of the truck? It would be a good idea to replace all the chains and tensioners. They are about the only weak link in a SOHC. Rockauto sells the whole kit for about $300.
