timing chain question
timing chain question
How much play if any should there be in the timing chain, I can turn the cam sprocket a real little bit before the chain tightens on the crank sprocket and stops it. This remanufactured motor only has 8,ooo on it. Should it be tight so it doesn't move at all? I'm installing a new cam and if I need a new timing chain now's the time to do it. Thank you.
No the chain will have some slack, it's checked by pushing inward from the side of the chain midways between the cam/crank sprockets with one side taught. Should move less than a .5" On that note a new cam might warrant a new timing set if not a chain. For the $ a set would be ease of mind.
I have one ordered, after I posted the question I thought about it and it didn't take long to deceide to get a new one. This remanufactured engine was pathetic only 8,000 miles on it and the only thing left on it is the block and crank.
Cant really see the point in tossing a cam in something thats shot. I'd get the gauges out and do some tests and find out just where you stand on the thing. Personally I've of the belief it takes a hellof alot to "shoot" one of these FE's Mine was running smooth with a miss, that turned out to be a burned valve. It started a knock that was getting worse so I decided to get it over with. I found the worst crap I'd ever seen in an engine that was still on the road in my life. Yet this thing was pulling passes in Northern Cali like pancakes at McDonalds... I'd have a real good look at the thing "I'd" as in screw the local mech unless he's your brother in law. Get siome info together and decide what to do. Lots of good folks here with tons of knowledge than can and will be glad to help with anything from a basic check to a overhaul.. BOL
