Cool My 6.0 died!

Finally after EGR bypass and frequent cooling fan operation, my 6.0 shut down completely other night.

Just had in the shop day before to look over the cooling fan. shop did not report any problems with temps or pressure or codes. only noticed leaking coolant around reservoir. coolant was low. flushed and refilled. also had oil coolant filter kit installed. seemed to be working fine.

hauled 3 horses to rodeo on Friday. 2 hour trip in texas heat. kept monitoring temp gauge and leaking coolant with no major issues. then truck lost power on way back and shut down completely. crank but no start. right in the middle of the road. not a lot of fun unloading horses on major road. luckily it was night with little traffic and cop lights.

towed back to shop. wait to hear problem on Monday. fearing the worst.

F350 DRW 125K miles.

What do you mean EGR bypass? What work was specifically done?

I assume this is your 2005 truck?

Not sure what you mean by "oil coolant filter kit". What is that?

How much coolant was lost (how low was it)?

What temperature gauge were you watching - the factory one or an aftermarket?

yep 2005 dually. EGR delete kit.

filter kit to catch the crap from plugging the oil cooler.

not sure on coolant. surprised it was low since EGR caused refill end of last year. added another gallon that morning after the orig flush/refill. that wasn't a good sign.

couldn't see any in reservoir after truck shut down. didn't really see any on road. looked like it sprayed pretty good around the reservoir.

Assuming the EGR cooler is completely gone, it could very well be a head gasket leakage issue with the coolant. Did you look real closely for hoses leaking or a cracked degas bottle?

A common issue for the 2005 "dying" and not restarting (when hot at least) is a leak in the high pressure oil system - very common to be at the snap-to-connect fitting at the HPOP (also d-rings on the dummy plugs, end several other areas).

It is the coolant reservoir on the drivers side of the engine.

I can relate, been stranded 3 times on the side of the road with my entire family because of my 6.0! Hope it's a cheap fix!
