Front Hub Assy question

Ive just spent a week with autozone trying to figure this one out. After waiting for them to give me 2 wrong parts...

My truck is:
1999 F-350 Super Duty 7.3 PowerStroke Dually 4x4, 4 wheel ABS, made in 3/18/99. The right, front hub is bad(rocks back and forth). The mechanic wanted 1000 bucks to change it...

First what part do I need here? The one they want to give me is waaay too small... and I dont want to order the wrong one again from the website.

Second is there a list of items that are specific only to my trucks make date? What did they change when making my month?

I'm trying to learn all I can about this beast...

$1000 to change a wheel hub? A good mechanic should be able to do that in about an hour. The hub itself shouldn't be more than $500 including pheriperals (that's a high estimate).

Time to find a new mechanic. Hopefully one that charges less than $500/hr labor rate.

I'm not sure why Auto Zone is screwing your order up. If you can keep your truck off the road for a couple days, take the bad one off and take it with you to the parts guy. That's the best way to match the replacement part.

Try calling the dealership parts desk about the possibility of two different hubs on the 99's. They may even be able to give you a part number.

Side note on figuring out your beast - It's not the destination that counts, it's the journey.

I just replaced both front hub assemblies on my truck. As stated it's not a difficult job.

There are two different types for the 2001 F350 course and fine. I've hear that this has to do with the lug nut threads and not the hub assembly and how it bolts to the axle.

I got my parts from the local NAPA store and they were an exact match.

If you have some time and another vehicle for transportation Ed the parts guy could hook you up with the factory part.

Take it from me... spend the extra $20 and get replacement studs. It took me over an hour to get the old studs out and that was with a small map gas torch.

I bought mine from NAPA as well. They asked me if I had ABS on the front wheels (which i don't) so they gave me the correct part. I suppose that means whey have both types.
And yes, you will have to deal with the early '99 vs late '99 issue. Your build date is right on the border so your truck will have some early parts and some late parts most likely.

For instance, my truck is a late '99 but the front sway bar end links are the early '99 type. You will be better off if you can take your old hub in to match up to whatever they give you.

On a side note, I wish I would have saved my old hubs instead of tossing them out. They would have made a great rotisserie for my '55 Bel Air when I pulled the body off the frame. (still kicking myself for that one.....)

Thanks for the reply there guys...Im in the middle of a moving nightmare and this hub is just the cherry on top. Unfortunately, the Air Force cant seem to give me an answer on weather or not I will be driving cross country or moving 10 miles up the road. So the truck will be parked till I actually have time to change it.

When I do have the time, I will take the old part off and go from there .... possibly NAPA too. I honestly think that my dually has different hubs up front than regular full sizes.

Are you absolutely sure it's not your wheel bearing that's bad? Jack up the front just enough so you can rock the wheel side-to-side, i.e 3:00 to 9:00 o'clock. If you get movement then your wheel bearing is bad. Mine went out around 83,000 miles. The design has the inner and outer bearings butted practically up against each other.

Where is the AF thinking of sending you? Thanks for your service! V/r Les

3:00-9:00 could bee steering components also. 12:00-6:00 would eleminate possibilty of steering components, but adds balljoints. Even worn balljoints are hard to deflect by hand.
