Well what's wrong with it now? If it's a 1G alt then you got one two-wire plug on the top or the side of it, and the large charge cable that bolts up to the stud on the back... Does that help you any? For more details, refer to this wiring diagram:
Alternator:
Fld = F on Regulator
Stat = Not used
Bat = Positive Terminal on Battery (battery side of the Glow Plug Relay, Or starter relay)
Grnd = To Block (Ensure Grounds are, Block to Chassis, Block to Cab)
Regulator:
F = Fld on Alternator
S = Ignition keyon (keyon only, Not keyacc or keystart))
A = Has TWO wires, 1) Bat on Alternator, 2) Static Suppression condenser
I = Not used
Ensure Regulator is grounded to chassis (Chassis is grounded to Block, Block is grounded to Cab)
The I terminal is for vehicles with Idiot lights and is not used on vehicles with gages.
I forgot to mention, the A terminal of the regulator has TWO wires ... 1 goes to the BAT terminal on the Alternator, the other goes to the static suppression condenser.
The acronyms used are marked on the devices. ie: BAT, GRND F, S, A, I ...
On the regulator it's marked on the plastic clip, the alternator is marked on the rear.
It's impossible to trace wires with pictures ... Show you the connections yes, but are you working with a proper harness ??
I don't have a picture of an installed harness, I have them out of both my trucks laying on the floor getting re-worked, if you need a image of the harness on the floor I can do that!
To start with, there should be a small wire that runs from the Positive battery terminal on the battery to a large terminal on either the Starter Relay or the Glow Plug relay ... This is where the "BAT" wire from the alternator should hook up.
86 Alternator harness on the floor!
Wires from left to right ...
Plugs into cab harness, not sure of all the wires ...
BAT wire from Alternator, Black/Orange, Goes where ever the small wire on the positive battery post/terminal goes mentioned above.
Cab power plug.
Regulator Plug:
F = Orange/Blue
S = Green/Red
A = Yellow
I = Unused
Tachometer plug.
Alternator FLD plug, Orange/Blue, plugs into Alternator
BAT wire, Black/Orange, Hooks to the BAT terminal stud on the Alternator.
